Lok Sabha polls: In Punjab, jailed Amritpal and other radicals add a new twist
Punjab goes to polls on June 1, in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections, wrapped in an air of unpredictability. With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) breaking the alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), now there are four big parties in fray. For a long time, Punjab had been a two-party state with the Congress and the SAD. The AAP's victory in the 2017 assembly polls changed that. In several seats, it's a five-cornered fight as Sikh radical candidates who support Khalistan, are also contesting. The chief among them is Amritpal Singh, the Sikh separatist who headed the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, and is lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act. However, the most influential among the separatists fighting elections is Simranjit SIngh Mann, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), who had won in the 2019 elections from Sangrur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of the AAP. Amritpal, the candidate in jail The entry of jailed radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh into the poll fray as an Independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat has stirred the politics in this region, which borders Pakistan.

Chandigarh Lok Sabha 2024 Elections: Date, schedule, party-wise candidates and other details
BJP and Congress, a trend seen in most elections since the city's inaugural parliamentary polls in 1967. However, this time, it's not just a clash between two parties but also the culmination of over a decade-long anticipation for the two primary contenders—Sanjay Tandon from the BJP and Manish Tewari from the Congress. For the first time, the Congress party is contesting the Chandigarh elections in alliance with AAP. While on the other hand, BJP and its traditional ally, Shiromani Akali Dal, have decided to part ways for this election. The rehabilitation colonies and villages, which comprise nearly half of the city's 6.6 lakh voters, play a crucial role in determining the election outcome. Residents in these areas also demonstrate a higher inclination to participate in the electoral process compared to those living in the sectorial grid.

Lok Sabha Elections: Is the kaleen rolling out for Apna Dal's Anupriya didi in Mirzapur season 3?
Mirzapur, a district made famous by an OTT series, has never seen an incumbent MP win a third term. Anupriya Patel, the sitting MP since 2014 from Apna Dal (Sonelal) and a part of the NDA, is determined to break this streak. At 43, she faces a strong challenge from Ramesh Chand Bind, a 50-year-old who switched from BJP to SP after being denied a ticket in his home constituency, Bhadohi. The Mirzapur parliamentary seat includes five assembly segments: Chhanbey, Mirzapur, Majhawan, Chunar, and Marihaan. While the fictional character "Kaleen Bhaiya" belongs to the reel world, real-life carpet traders in the region are looking for a representative who can address their business issues. Rajesh Kumar, vice-president of the All India Carpet Manufacturers’ Association, noted that although the «one district, one product» scheme has helped build the Bhadohi-Mirzapur carpet brand, the industry still lacks adequate support. He told TOI that recent years have seen the removal of incentives and the introduction of more regulations, which have hurt the business.

BJP has odds stacked against it in Punjab. What gives it hope?
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been a bit player in Punjab politics, playing a second fiddle to its senior alliance partner the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) since 1996. But this time, it decided to come out of SAD's shadow and fight the Lok Sabha elections on its own. The SAD had walked out of the alliance over the farm bills but both were considering coming together again which did not happen. While testing the waters in Punjab on its own, where it ranks fourth after the AAP, the Congress and the SAD, the BJP finds odds are stacked against it. It faces backlash from protesting farmers in a state where traditionally the BJP has not had any core voters of its own. In the absence of its alliance partner, the SAD, it might not have much traction in rural areas. Yet, the state BJP leaders are quite upbeat. They are hopeful of winning at least four seats of the total 13, double the number they have been winning in the state in the past few Lok Sabha elections. What explains their optimism when the party doesn't have any voter base of its own and the dominant farmer community has turned against it?

Intent, welfare steps, nation first will give NDA third term: PM Modi
Narendra Modi claimed on Sunday that people have decided to elect him for a third term in these Lok Sabha elections due to "good intentions, welfare policies and dedication to the nation" of his dispensation in the last decade. While campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, he alleged that the erstwhile Samajwadi Party government in the state would even release terrorists for appeasement politics. Modi addressed BJP public meetings in Mirzapur, Ghosi and Bansgaon in UP on Sunday where he attacked the Samajwadi Party and Congress on law and order issues and alleged plans of giving reservation to Muslims from the SC, ST and OBC quota.

Done with their job, some of them said the biggest relief was the certain prospect of returning to the torrential downpour lashing across Kerala. Already in ‘Sweet Mood’: Looks like AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal believes in early celebrations.
