UN warns Israel: Rafah invasion could 'lead to slaughter'
Israeli ground invasion of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, saying an offensive could «lead to a slaughter» in the southern region of the Palestinian enclave where more than 1 million people are sheltering. Israel says it wants to flush out Hamas militants from hideouts in Rafah and free Israeli hostages being held there, and is making plans to evacuate trapped Palestinian civilians. «Military operations in Rafah could lead to a slaughter in Gaza. They could also leave an already fragile humanitarian operation at death's door,» said U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths. «We lack the safety guarantees, the aid supplies and the staff capacity to keep this operation afloat.

Shah Rukh Khan had no hand in release of Indian Navy officers from Qatar, says star's office
diplomacy and statecraft are best executed by «our very able leaders», Shah Rukh Khan's office said on Tuesday, dismissing speculation that the star was involved in the release of eight jailed former Indian Navy personnel from Qatar. Qatar on Monday released the Indian Navy veterans who were sentenced to death and whose sentences were commuted to jail terms of varying duration. Seven of them have returned home. Speculation that Shah Rukh, who enjoys massive popularity in Qatar and recently met the country's prime minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Doha during an event, played a role in the release of the jailed Indians was rife on Tuesday. Former MP Subramanian Swamy's claim in a post on X that the actor had intervened in the matter circulated widely on social media platforms. Shah Rukh was trending on X for much of the day.

Romance and matchmaking could get easier with a little help from our machine friends
Aleksandr Zhadan programmed ChatGPT to screen potential candidates on his behalf so that he didn't have to go through the tedious process of personally interacting with women. The AI LLM 'talked to' over 5,000 women on Tinder, based on Zhadan's filters and communication style to finally recommend one woman. And Zhadan went on to marry his AI-recommended match. For most young people, finding love digitally isn't new. It has been around for a while with dating apps, online matrimony services and location-based virtual dating services. But users of such services have been experiencing fatigue from having to fix dates, meeting several strangers and being ghosted. So, having AI find the perfect match for a 'been-there-done-that' individual — and one that takes over the onerous task of communicating with, and screening, thousands of potential candidates — can be a real game changer for the digital native. Little wonder then that Zhadan's viral post on X is likely to inspire many others to take the AI route to find love. Some of them may even take it to the next post-human level — feeling there is no need for matchmaking when AI can turn into the match, and talk and date like a real person. Why bother with a physical Valentine when you can have a virtual one? Spike Jonze's 2013 SF-rom 'Her', with the protagonist (Joaquin Phoenix) developing a relationship with an AI virtual assistant (Scarlett Johansson), puts this possibility in a fictional context.

Supreme Court on Tuesday asked Attorney General R Venkataramani to inform it whether a prosecution has been carried out ever under the provision of mandatory capital punishment to an individual who fabricates false evidence against an innocent member of a scheduled caste or a scheduled tribe. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and K V Viswanathan was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Rishi Malhotra, who has sought striking down of the mandatory death penalty provision under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Section 3 (2) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 stipulates mandatory death sentence in a case where an innocent member of a scheduled caste or a scheduled tribe is convicted and is executed in consequence of a false and fabricated evidence given by the concerned accused. As the hearing commenced, Venkataramani submitted that it is important to have some data as to whether offences under this provision have occurred at all.

Dattaji Rao Gaekwad: The Man who matched Hazare stroke for stroke
accidental Indian captain who matched the peerless Vijay Hazare stroke for stroke with a cover drive to die for, Dattajirao Gaekwad should have played more than 11 Tests, given the talent this remarkable player from Baroda possessed. On Tuesday, Gaekwad died in his hometown Baroda at the age of 95. Statistically, he was the oldest living Indian Test cricketer since the death of Deepak Shodhan in 2016. A nightmare for the Bombay (Mumbai) teams of the 1950s, those cover drives, unfortunately, never really came off when he played at the highest level from 1952 to 1961. His son Aunshuman, who played 40 Tests from the 1970s to the 80s, was more successful with a tight defensive technique compared to his father.
