Unease grows as Republicans demand probe into explosive group chat scandal where White House officials shared sensitive military intel
independent investigation into a Signal group chat where top Trump administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, shared sensitive military details about planned strikes in Yemen. The chat, which inadvertently included *The Atlantic*’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, has sparked bipartisan alarm over national security protocols. While Democrats demand resignations, Republicans like Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) argue an inquiry is “entirely appropriate” but stop short of calling for dismissals, calling such demands “overkill.”

Par panel suggests penalties for IAS officers for failure to file property details
IAS officers if they fail to file their property details within the prescribed time limit. Ninety-one Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers did not file their immovable property returns (IPRs) in 2024 and 73 the year before, according to 145th report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice on the Demands for Grants (2025-26) pertaining to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The report was tabled in Parliament on March 27. Vigilance clearance, mandatory to join certain posts, was denied to 15 IAS officers in 2023, 12 in 2022 and 14 in 2021, due to non-filing of IPRs for respective years. The panel recommended that a centralised compliance monitoring mechanism may be established to ensure timely filing of IPRs by all IAS officers. «This mechanism should involve creation of a dedicated task force within the department responsible for tracking and filing status of all officers. Additionally, the committee proposes to introduce penalties or corrective actions for non-compliance, including automatic escalation procedures for officers who fail to file their IPRs despite reminders,» the report said.

Trump administration to honour Bangladesh's women student protest leaders for bravery
The women student protest leaders of Bangladesh will be honoured with the 'Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award', named after the first woman to serve as US Secretary of State. «A valiant group of women were key drivers in the student protest movement against violent repression in Bangladesh in July-August 2024. They demonstrated extraordinary bravery, including standing between security forces and male protestors in spite of threats and violence,» the State Department said in a statement. «When their male counterparts were arrested, these women found innovative ways to continue communication and lead the protests, defying censorship efforts, even during the complete shutdown of the Internet. The bravery and selflessness of these women amid uncertainty was the very definition of courage,» it said. However, the State Department did not name any particular individual for the award.

IPL 2025: Du Plessis, Mitchell Starc guide DC to seven-wicket win over SRH
Once DC openers made a quick start off the block, the result was never in doubt, but their approach was vastly different. Du Plessis wound the clock back with some stunning shots, such as a straight six off Pat Cummins. But at other end, McGurk was struggling for his timing, partly because of his exaggerated back-lift and partly because of his desire to hit all the ball out of the park. However, his senior partner was willing to do the heavy-lifting and brought up his fifty in 26 balls.

Crypto traders dodging TDS via Binance under I-T lens
Binance have come under the glare of the tax authorities. Over the past few weeks, the Income Tax (I-T) department has inquired whether the 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) levied on such deals have been collected. Local investors must either provide proof of TDS deduction or submit documentary evidence on why TDS is not applicable to them, according to notices served by the tax office. Probing into the traders' source of money, the department has sought their I-T returns for the years when the funds used to purchase cryptos were earned. A few scrutiny notices, questioning the transaction data downloaded from the website of the offshore exchange, have imposed 30% tax on the entire turnover instead of claiming tax on the gains.

Top US vaccine official busts RKF Jr's 'lies, misinformation' in resignation letter after being forced to quit
Dr. Peter Marks sent a letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner on Friday saying that he would resign and retire by April 5 as director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. In his letter, obtained by The Associated Press, Marks said he was “willing to work” to address the concerns expressed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about the safety of vaccinations. But he concluded that wasn’t possible. “It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the Secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies,” he wrote. RR VS CSK weather, pitch report: Will rain play a spoilsport? What will the conditions be like in Guwahati today? Check details here
Dhoni's unbeaten 30 off 16 balls only has value for nostalgia merchants as the former India captain is doing disservice to his team by coming in to bat when all is seemingly lost. In this backdrop, playing RR on a surface which is «more Chepauk-ish than typical Barsapara Stadium track full of runs» might just help CSK get a win against a side that also doesn't boast of a great bowling attack. Also Riyan Parag is too raw as a skipper and to put it mildly seems completely out of place for a high stakes assignment like leading a billion dollar franchise. But all these years, CSK had the personnel to play that game, especially in the bowling department, which doesn't look top notch this year.

US immigration officials look to collect social media handles from those seeking benefits. Is this new?
Trump. The March 5 notice raised alarms from immigration and free speech advocates because it appears to expand the government's reach in social media surveillance to people already vetted and in the U.S. legally, such as asylum seekers, green card and citizenship applicants — and not just those applying to enter the country. That said, social media monitoring by immigration officials has been a practice for over a decade, since at least the second Obama administration and ramping up under Trump's first term. Below are some questions and answers on what the new proposal means and how it might expand social media surveillance.

Post, protest, pack up: Indian students among those told to self-deport by US
international students in the US have received emails from the US State Department instructing them to self-deport due to alleged involvement in campus activism. Immigration attorneys confirmed to TOI's Lubna Kably that some Indian students are also among those affected, with actions as minor as sharing a social media post leading to visa revocations. This crackdown follows a directive from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which mandates social media reviews of both current international students and new applicants for student visas. Those found in violation face visa cancellations, making them ineligible to study in the US. Axios previously reported that this effort, powered by artificial intelligence, has resulted in the revocation of over 300 student visas. Affected students have been informed that their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records have been terminated, leaving them no grace period to stay in the country. The email states, «On behalf of the US Department of State, the Bureau of Consular Affairs Visa Office hereby informs you that additional information became available after your visa was issued. As a result, your F-1 visa with expiration date XXXXX was revoked in accordance with Section 221(i) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended.»

Protesters target 277 Tesla locations in US over Elon Musk's government role, demand resignation
Tesla dealerships to express their opposition to billionaire Elon Musk's involvement in the US government, Al Jazeera reported. Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has faced criticism for his efforts to cut government spending and access sensitive data. The protests, organised by a group including disgruntled Tesla owners, celebrities, and a Democratic lawmaker, aim to pressure Musk to resign from his government position. Saturday's demonstrations marked the first coordinated effort to target all 277 Tesla locations in the US, as per Al Jazeera. In New York City, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Manhattan Tesla store, demanding Musk's resignation. These demonstrations coincide with a decline in Tesla sales, which the organizers hope to exacerbate further. The protesters were gathered at the call of environmentalists from Planet Over Profit, who believe that «stopping Musk will save lives and protect our democracy.»
