Kerala government on Monday said the families of the tribal communities of Wayanad, which was recently hit by devastating landslides on July 30, were safe and were staying in relief camps arranged by the SC/ST department. Currently, 47 tribal community members, including children, are in various relief camps under the state government. All the tribal families in the region have survived the landslides that hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions of Wayanad, officials said. «The four families from Erattukund hamlet will be rehabilitated. Even though the officials tried to take them to camps near Meppadi, the families expressed interest in remaining at Attamala camp inside the forest,» a state government release said.

Kerala government has initiated steps to identify the missing people in the landslide that hit the Mundakkai region of Wayanad district and started collecting the blood samples of survivors and relatives for DNA analysis. While the health department has begun collecting blood samples for DNA analysis, the Civil Supplies Department has started collecting the details of ration cards, the Aadhaar number, and linked phone numbers to identify the missing people. The samples, from the blood relatives, are collected for the DNA testing in order to identify the dead bodies and body parts which are yet to be identified.

Gujarat government has decided to extend the ban on fishing activities in the Arabian Sea by a fortnight till August 15, a move the Congress claimed to be «unfair and reckless» which will cause financial losses to fishermen. A senior official from the Gujarat fisheries department on Sunday said the decision was taken in consultation with the central government after considering a representation made by the fishermen's association to allow more time for fish to breed. The government also took into account scientific data and weather conditions to reach the decision, he said, adding the change is also likely to be adopted by other states on the western coast. Since 2021, the annual fishing ban in the state remained in effect from June 1 till July 31.

Suresh Gopi on Sunday said that the Centre will examine the legality behind the demand from various quarters to classify as a national disaster the landslides that hit this north Kerala district and killed hundreds. Gopi, who is Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that the Central government will «examine its legal aspects» after carrying out an evaluation of the landslides which wiped away hundreds of homes in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of the district. «The impact has to be studied,» he said. Infosys said late Saturday that the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) had ended “the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial year 2017-2018,” adding that “the GST amount as per the pre-show cause notice for this period was Rs 3,898 crore”. The development comes three days after Infosys acknowledged receipt of a notice for alleged evasion of over Rs 32,000 crore ($3.8 billion) in integrated goods and services tax (IGST) between July 2017, when the levy was rolled out, and FY22. On Friday, Karnataka withdrew the pre-show cause notice it had sent to the company on the matter and asked Infosys to submit further responses on the demand to DGGI. CBI has registered an FIR into a major racket of making Aadhaar cards allegedly using forged documents and fingerprints for Rs 25,000 in Rajasthan, officials said, adding that three persons have been booked. In some cases, fingerprints and retina scans of school kids, even toe prints were used to make the Aadhaar cards, they said. The matter came to light through a news report after a complaint was filed with police by a programmer in the department of information technology and communication, Manohar Lal, in Sanchore, they said.

Mizoram and Assam governments will be held in Aizawl on August 9 to find a lasting solution to the vexed inter-state border dispute between two states. A senior official of the Mizoram Home Department said that Home Minister K. Sapdanga would lead the state’s delegation while the Assam delegation would be headed by the state’s Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora.
