mortal remains of a fisherman who died at sea to the Indian Navy near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in the wee hours on Saturday, an official release here said. Indian Navy ship, INS Bitra, which was on deployment off Rameshwaram, coordinated with the Sri Lankan Navy ship and received the fishermen and the dead body at sea at about 1 am. The Indian Navy ship then proceeded to Rameshwaram, where the Navy Officer from the Naval Detachment coordinated with marine police and Tamil Nadu Fisheries department in transferring the mortal remains and the fishermen, at around 3 am, the release said. On August 1, a fisherman from Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram reportedly died and another went missing when the boat in which they were fishing in the mid-sea capsized after colliding with the Sri Lankan Navy ship.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday said the state government would provide free electricity to about 30,000 government schools as part of measures to improve infrastructure facilities. Addressing a convention of teachers who have recently been promoted, he also said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal won elections thrice as he improved government schools and provided quality education to the poor. Observing that electricity supply is a sine qua non for imparting quality education in schools, including using computers, he said power supply was stopped by the energy department when electricity bills of schools were not paid, he said. «When (free power) is given to farmers and 200 units free (power) is provided to the poor, why cannot free electricity be provided in schools where Telangana's future is built. I gave directives to our government officials to provide free power to the 30,000 schools in Telangana. The state government will take that burden,» he said.

Delhi Police has sought information from the Maharashtra government, the IAS training academy in Mussoorie and AIIMS Delhi on former IAS prohibitionary officer Puja Khedkar in connection with a cheating and forgery case, sources said on Friday. Khedkar was booked by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on July 19 for wrongly availing OBC and PwD (person with disabilities) quota benefits to secure her candidature in the civil services exam. On Thursday, a Delhi court denied her anticipatory bail, saying there were serious allegations against her which «require a thorough investigation». Khedkar, who has not been arrested in the case, had approached the court through her lawyer, saying she faces «immediate threat of arrest».

The top court used its special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, directing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to conduct a fresh physical fitness test for Rakshit Shivam Prakash, who ranked 93 in the civil services exam held in 2014 but lost out due to «unacceptable» Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI of the candidate was at 31.75, which is higher than the prescribed standard of 30. He was declared «temporarily unfit» and consequently, denied employment. He could not take part in the second medical test scheduled on July 14, 2015. Article 142 of the Constitution empowers the top court to pass «any decree or order necessary for doing complete justice in any case or matter pending before it».

According to an official statement, the Department of Consumer Affairs has extended the timeline for submission of comments on the proposed amendment in Rule 3 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 until August 30. The last date of submission was July 29. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 make it mandatory to declare information like name and address of the manufacturer/ packer/ importer, country of origin, common or generic name of the commodity, net quantity, month and year of manufacture, MRP, Unit Sale Price, best before/use by date and consumer care details on all pre-packaged commodities. However, Rule 3 provides that these rules are not applicable for the packaged commodities containing quantity of more than 25 kilogram or 25 litre except cement, fertilizer and agricultural farm produce sold in bags above 50 kilogram. It is presumed that the packaged commodities meant for retail sale are not more than 25 kg, the statement said.

This process was a «part of building a prediction model», which will take 4-5 years to be ready for public use, a GSI official said. «GSI has started issuing regional landslide forecast bulletins on an experimental mode once a day for Wayanad district, Kerala. These are issued only to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for ground testing since the onset of the 2024 monsoon. It is restricted only to SDMA and DDMA for receiving feedback,» a GSI spokesperson told PTI. These forecasts are based on rainfall predictions provided by the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to prepare landslide thresholds, he said.
