Monsoon ends with 'normal' rainfall as positive factors counter El Nino effect, says IMD
monsoon season has ended with India receiving «normal» cumulative rainfall — 820 mm against a long-period average of 868.6 mm — with positive factors countering the effect of El Nino conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. Rainfall between 94 per cent and 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) is considered normal. However, normal cumulative rainfall over the country during the monsoon season doesn't mean even spatial and temporal spread of precipitation.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service also released an updated recovery plan Friday for "Canis rufus" — the only wolf species unique to the United States. It calls for spending nearly $328 million over the next 50 years to get the red wolf off the endangered species list. «This final revised recovery plan will help the conservation and survival of the Red Wolf, ensuring these endangered canids endure in the wild for future generations,» Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Shannon Estenoz said in a news release.

Identify, transform 100 most backward blocks, Modi tells central, state authorities
Speaking at the launch of ‘Sankalp Saptaah’, a week-long programme on the implementation of the government’s aspirational blocks programme, Modi told the secretaries of central government departments and officials of states to identify 100 blocks in the country that are lagging behind in their respective departments and work towards improving the conditions there. Modi stressed that these 100 identified blocks should surpass the national average in development and said Sankalp Saptaah should not merely remain a NITI Aayog programme.

US government teeters on brink of shutdown with no deal in view
Joe Biden's administration issuing increasingly dire warnings of everything from impending border chaos to travel disruptions. The closure, set to start after midnight Saturday (0400 GMT Sunday) if lawmakers fail to reach a deal, would be the first since 2019 — impacting millions of federal employees and military personnel while threatening the closure of national parks. The two chambers of Congress are deadlocked, with a small group of Republicans in the House of Representatives pushing back against any stopgap measure that would at least keep the lights on. On Friday, hardline House Republicans defeated a plan proposed by their own leader to keep funds flowing, with a bill to temporarily fund the government rejected in a 232-198 vote. The measure involved deep spending cuts and would unlikely have passed the Democratic-majority Senate. Office of Management and Budget director Shalanda Young said Friday it was up to hardline Republican lawmakers to resolve the impasse, telling reporters «there is still a chance» of avoiding a shutdown. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre added at a briefing that «the conversation is not between the president and McCarthy.» «The conversation needs to happen between Speaker McCarthy and his caucus.

US government shutdown looming: Should you be worried? Explained
Republican-controlled House has made little progress — most recently with Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s last-ditch plan collapsing Friday. If spending measures aren't passed by Saturday night, millions of federal employees will be furloughed and many others will be forced to work without pay until the shutdown ends. A handful of federal safety services that people rely on everyday are also in jeopardy.

Man arrested in connection with Tupac Shakur killing: Here’s what you may want to know
Tupac Shakur. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department executed a new search warrant in July, reopening the investigation near the Las Vegas Strip where Shakur was killed 30 years ago. Duane “Keffe D” Davis was apprehended early on a Friday morning. The exact charges were not specified. Davis has previously claimed to be a witness to the crime but has never disclosed names. In his 2019 memoir, "Compton Street Legend," Davis alleged he was in the car involved in targeting Shakur, who was 25 years old when he was killed. The arrest followed a police raid on Davis’ wife’s Henderson home on July 17. Details were limited, but police seized computers, a cellphone, a hard drive, a Vibe magazine featuring Shakur, bullets, photos, and a copy of «Compton Street Legend.» Federal authorities in Las Vegas and Los Angeles have previously investigated Shakur’s death, but no arrests have been made. Nevada has no statute of limitations for homicide cases, and the investigation into Shakur’s death has been ongoing for nearly three decades, with periods of inactivity.
