Unemployment, demand for MSP key issues in Haryana polls
Unemployment, farmers' demand for a legal guarantee to MSP, the Agnipath scheme, and law and order are some of the key issues in the high-stakes Haryana assembly polls slated for October 5. Haryana is witnessing a multi-cornered contest this time, with the ruling BJP facing anti-incumbency and a resurgent Congress. Other players in the contest are the Aam Aadmi Party, contesting independently, and JJP-Azad Samaj Party and INLD-BSP combine. The opposition Congress has launched a vitriolic attack on the 10-year-regime of the BJP in Haryana, alleging that unemployment rate in the state is «highest» in the country.

Claimed 87A tax rebate for STCG in your ITR? You may get tax demand notice
Tax rebate under section 87A of the Income-tax Act, 1961 is a benefit that reduces the total income tax liability of an eligible taxpayer. The eligibility criteria are that the taxpayer's income should be below a set threshold and not having certain types of income. For example, one of the criteria for tax rebate under section 87A is to have an income below Rs 5 lakh (old tax regime) or Rs 7 lakh (new tax regime). However, following an update in the ITR filing utility on July 5, 2024, chartered accountants say that many taxpayers were denied the benefit of tax rebate under section 87A if they had certain special rate incomes like short-term capital gains (STCG). STCG on equity shares or equity-oriented mutual funds were taxable at 15% rate under Section 111A which was raised to 20% in Budget 2024 presented in July this year.

How wearing lipstick turned a woman duffedar's job nightmarish
S B Madhavi, the first woman duffedar in the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), has found herself at the centre of a controversy after she was transferred from the mayor's office to the far-off Manali zone. At 50, Madhavi, who had been ceremonially engaged to accompany Chennai mayor R Priya, claims she was shunted out for wearing lipstick, disobeying a direct order not to do so, TOI has reported. The situation escalated after Madhavi received a memo on August 6 from the mayor's personal assistant, Siva Sankar, citing “dereliction of duty, not coming to work during working hours, and disobeying orders of seniors” as reasons for her transfer. In her response, Madhavi questioned the accusations and specifically addressed the issue of her lipstick.
