ETMarkets Fund Manager Talk: Earnings risk can disrupt stock boom, says Vinit Sambre of DSP Mutual Fund
With Nifty and Sensex trading close to all-time peak levels, Vinit Sambre, Head-Equities, DSP Mutual Fund, says there are looming risks to earnings growth over the upcoming quarters, primarily due to persistently weak consumption trends and the possibility of reduced government spending during election periods. «Given the elevated expectations and rich valuations, there is no room for any error. Consequently, any potential downward revisions in earnings forecasts could pose a risk of corrections in the market over the next 2-3 quarters,» he warns in an interview to ET Markets. Edited excerpts from a chat: Following a correction in February and March months, smallcaps bounced back with a bang in April. Isn't this leg of rally largely led by retail liquidity? Vinit Sambre: India's compelling narrative of robust economic growth, fuelled by ongoing reforms and government spending into core areas, has attracted investors eager to be part of this growth trajectory. Even minor corrections prompted by non-fundamental news have become opportunities for investors to enter the market, capitalizing on businesses available at comparatively lower prices than the recent past. The fear of missing out (FOMO) further motivates sidelined investors to seize these dips.

Elections 2024: Historic for the Constitution that unites us all?
The Indian Constitution—or the Samvidhan in Hindi—has rarely if ever been a campaign spearhead for national elections. This time, though, poll speeches have brought it up with a frequency that may suggest a deep divide over it. The irony: Both archrivals in the country’s electoral fray, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, have accused each other of planning to twist it for partisan ends.

Opposition has no chance in Goa this time: CM Pramod Sawant
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant says the BJP will cross the 50% vote share mark in South Goa, a seat the ruling party lost last elections. In an interview with Himani Kothari, the CM calls the BJP a secular party and talks about what his government is doing to ensure Goans always have a place in Goa. Edited excerpts: Q. How has Goa benefitted over the last 10 years because of a double-engine government? Goa has got direct benefit of over Rs 35,000 crore – from infrastructure to the various schemes. Q) How confident is the BJP about winning both the seats? We are 100% confident. We’re winning with 100,000+ margin in North Goa and in South, it would be a margin of 60,000+ votes.

Trump, whose own rhetoric has drawn accusations of fascist tendencies from civil rights groups and other critics, made the comparison with the Nazi police in Germany's World War Two regime at a donor retreat Saturday night at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Lok Sabha Polls: In Maharashtra's Kolhapur, Congress pins hopes on maharaja factor
Kolhapur is one of a few seats in Maharashtra that Congress is confident of bagging in this election. BJP's decision to backtrack from claiming this seat from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena too indicates that the going will not be easy for NDA this time. In the runup to the polls, BJP was pressurising Sena to hand over this seat in western Maharashtra to it. Shinde resisted the pressure as the Sena had a sitting MP, Sadashiv Mandlik. Yet BJP was relentless in seeking the seat, but then gave up the claim, the reason for which probably was the candidate Congress has fielded. Congress has managed to convince Shahu II Chhatrapati Maharaj, a descendant of Maratha warrior king Shivaji, to contest the polls. More importantly, he is the great grandson of Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, a maharaja of the former princely state Kolhapur and a well-known social reformer. During his rule, he had encouraged Dalit children to study and provided 50% reservation for them, as well as offered scholarships for poor meritorious students from the community. He established schools for women and legalised widow remarriage and worked to abolish child marriage. Within a day of Congress announcing Shahu Maharaj as its candidate, Prakash Ambedkar's VBA, which was making its own plans to contest separately, announced it would support his candidature.

Lok Sabha polls: Bhabhi and didi battle it out in Chhattisgarh's 'parched' Korba
Korba (Chhattisgarh): «Water is our biggest problem,» says Shivratan Singh, a resident of Lad village, about 65 km from Korba, which is India's biggest coal and power producing town in mineral-rich Chhattisgarh. Singh points to the water tank on the side of the road and says it had been constructed under Jal Jeevan Mission about a year back and taps also installed. «But they forgot to give us connections.» Just about a kilometre away is a dry pond. Villagers laugh when they point towards it. «We have never had water in this,» they say speaking about this pond which was dug under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). They complain about hefty electricity bills, unpaid MGNREGA wages and of remaining uncovered under the PM Awas Yojana. Brij Lal, a resident of Chhindwarpara village in the same block, says development schemes have never reached them. But what has excited them the most in this election is Congress' Mahalakshmi scheme which promises ₹1 lakh per year to women of every poor family. Listed as one of the aspirational districts by NITI Aayog, Korba is a study of contrasts.

Third Eye: Landing rights, Surat to Indore to Puri Express, Rare displayof bonhomie
Landing rights On April 29, a helipad was constructed at Shubhai village in Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency for RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's public meeting. Yadav's helicopter landed there on the same day and he addressed a gathering. On Tuesday, LJP leader and Hajipur candidate Chirag Paswan's chopper also landed on the same helipad without RJD's permission. The issue has now reached the Election Commission, with RJD filing a complaint against Paswan. Surat to Indore to Puri Express After the fiasco in Surat and Indore, Congress is staring at another one in Puri Lok Sabha seat. Party’s candidate Sucharita Mohanty has already dropped out of the race on financial grounds. Mohanty said that she couldn’t generate enough funds and the party also didn’t promise any financial support to her. However, two days are still left for filing nomination papers and the party was considering other options.

How Ram Mohan Roy ended sati, I stopped dynasty politics: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took dynastic politics head-on and said that much like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who abolished evil practices like sati and child-marriage, he too 'has put an end to the practice of only scions of royal families' holding the posts of chief minister and prime minister, paving the way for any poor man's son to hold these posts. Modi's address in Etawah was also meant to send a message to voters of Mainpuri and Kannauj, with BJP candidates of all three seats present on stage. While Mainpuri has been Mulayam Singh Yadav's Lok Sabha seat, now being contested by daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav, Kannauj is being contested by Akhilesh Yadav. Modi recalled Mulayam Singh's «blessing» to him in Parliament before the 2019 elections when he had said that he hoped that Modi would come back as PM for a second term. «Today, Netaji is not there among us, but look at the coincidence, his brother is appealing to make BJP win. He expressed his heart's desire after all,» Modi said, taking a jibe at Shivpal Yadav's gaffe a few days ago when, in a statement, instead of mentioning SP, he asked people to vote for 'BJP'.
