Imran Khan's party demands judicial probe into alleged rigging; No consensus yet on power-sharing formula
Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's party on Sunday demanded a judicial probe into growing allegations of vote rigging even as two major political parties failed to reach a power-sharing formula to form a coalition government. Though independent candidates backed by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party won the maximum number of seats in Parliament, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) — have announced that they will form a coalition government after the February 8 elections resulted in a hung Parliament. The post-poll alliance by the PML-N and the PPP could mean that PTI will not be able to form the next federal government, prompting Khan's party to allege that the two rival parties were trying to steal the people's mandate with the help of the powerful establishment.

Opposition lacks road map for 'Viksit Bharat', only BJP can deliver it: PM Modi at party convention
strong mandate is the first condition for India to realise its big goals as he exhorted thousands of party members to work with renewed energy, vigour and enthusiasm for the next 100 days to ensure a big victory. Addressing nearly 11,500 BJP delegates from across the country at Bharat Mandapam here, he said he is seeking power not for «satta bhog» (enjoying power) but for the country's benefit, and slammed the opposition, especially the Congress, saying they make all kinds of false promises but lack a road map for making the country developed. This is something only the BJP can do, he said, exuding confidence about his return to power while noting that many foreign countries have invited him for engagements in July, August and September. This suggests that these countries also know that «aayega toh Modi hi» (Modi's re-election is inevitable). In his 65-minute valedictory speech at the BJP's national convention ahead of the Lok Sabha elections expected in April-May, the prime minister stuck to the message of the country's growth and rising global standing besides his government's measures for empowering every section of society, especially the poor.

First the ED, then the BJP, and then the media. They are trying to disrupt peace there [Sandeshkhali]. If there are any allegations, we will take action, and whatever was taken forcibly will be returned. I have asked the police to take suo motu cognizance. Our block president has been arrested. In Bhangar, Arabul Islam has also been arrested. But what action has the BJP taken against their leaders? Remember, the BJP is anti-Bengali, anti-women, anti-farmer, and anti-dalit,» she said.

CM firm that ministers would have to take LS poll plunge if local leaders favoured their names
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday asserted that ministers would have no choice but to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls if that was the overwhelming opinion of local MLAs and party leaders, setting off worries in sections of ministers who are loath to the idea. The CM, responding to queries at Malavalli in Mandya district over social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa’s public refusal to contest the LS polls, said the party would go by the recommendation of the local MLAs, party candidates who lost the assembly polls, as well as block, and district presidents. Be it Mahadevappa or any other minister, the party would give the ticket to whoever the local leaders wanted, the CM said, suggesting that the ministers would have to take the plunge if the situation demanded that. The social welfare minister had, on Saturday, told the media that he did not want to contest the polls when he was told his name was among the potential candidates the party’s survey had revealed. A displeased Mahadevappa said the survey should probably also include the names of the CM and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar as they were also competent and popular leaders to contest the LS election.

Justin Trudeau's welcome mat for immigrants wears thin amid Canada housing crunch
Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to drive economic growth and plug labor gaps, but now he is hitting the brakes after a seismic shift in public opinion that could undermine his chances to win the next election. It was Trudeau's father, Pierre, who championed immigration as prime minister in the early 1970s, promoting «multiculturalism» as government policy. Over time, Canadians have come to see the country's diversity as part of its identity, like the maple leaf and hockey. Think you check all the immigration boxes? Find out But when international students led a surge in immigration in the wake of the pandemic, the public mood soured as rental costs soared and services like healthcare came under strain.

US divided on TikTok ban even as Biden campaign joins the app, AP-NORC poll shows
Joe Biden's campaign is embracing TikTok to court younger voters ahead of the presidential elections, but U.S. adults have mixed views about whether the video-sharing app should even operate in the country. A new poll by The Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds a three-way split when it comes to banning the app, with 31% of U.S. adults saying they would favor a nationwide ban on TikTok use, while 35% say they would oppose that type of action. An additional 31% of adults say they neither favor nor oppose a ban on the social media platform, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance. Among those who use TikTok at least daily, a national ban would likely be highly unpopular: 73% say they oppose it.
