Devendra Fadnavis will once again take over as chief minister of Maharashtra. On Wednesday morning, Fadnavis was unanimously elected as the legislative party leader at a BJP meeting at the state legislature, paving the way for him to be the chief minister of the state a third time. Fadnavis will be sworn in on Thursday. Fadnavis' name was proposed by MLAs Chandrakant Patil and Sudhir Mungantiwar and seconded by MLC Pankaja Munde and other members. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman were the central observers overseeing the entire process. In his speech, Fadnavis thanked the legislators for electing him as the legislative leader. «If I have to analyse the results of this historic election, then the key message is 'Ek hai to safe hai' and 'Modi hai toh Mumkin hai',» Fadnavis told the BJP legislators. Fadnavis issued a note of caution to the BJP MLAs saying, «There are a lot of expectation from us. We have a huge mandate. We can't fulfil all the things that everyone wants. The larger goal for why we have come into politics is not for just any post or to become big. In the coming days, things will happen in our favour and things will go against us. In the larger interest, we have to work together,» Fadnavis said hinting that the BJP will also have to compromise in the interest of its two allies — Shiv Sena and NCP.

Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj is undertaking several measures, including the use of community radio, to spread awareness against the "Sarpanch Pati" system, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The «Sarpanch Pati» system is a practice in which the husband of an elected woman sarpanch wields the actual power. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj SP Singh Baghel said various modes of information, education and communication activities, media engagement, conferences, seminars, training programmes, screening of public service awareness films, broadcasting of programmes through community radio were being done to spread awareness on issues such as the «Sarpanch Pati» system.

Assam Cabinet meeting has decided to ban beef in hotels, restaurants and public places in the state. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after the cabinet meeting held in New Delhi said, “What we started three years back consumption of beef was banned within a radius of 5 km of temple, Satra. Today we have taken a step ahead and decided that beef will be banned in hotels, restaurants and will not be served in public places.” He added, “Assam government has passed the Cattle Preservation 2021 Act, and we have had a lot of success.”

Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a sarcastic dig at Ajit Pawar after the NCP Chief interjected immediately over a question directed towards Shinde. S Chockalingam has said the seven per cent increase in voter turnout in the last hour of polling for the state assembly elections was not a surge, as claimed by the opposition, but an «average» process. In a video statement on Monday, Chockaligam said Maharashtra is a large state with more than one lakh polling booths. «If 76 lakh voters turn up in the last hour of polling, it is only (an average of) 76 voters in each of the polling centres,» he added. Modi famously referred to him as «Nagpur's gift to the country» during a campaign rally, underscoring the confidence placed in Fadnavis.

Sunil Subramaniam: I think it will last till the middle of February, I do not see a quick turn on that because one of the things which is hurting and these are the bottom of the pyramid in the auto segment, two wheelers are the lowest priced vehicles and that is where the inflation has been hurting the consumer and hence demand at the bottom of the pyramid has been weak and I think until the monsoon forecast actually translates into lower vegetable and food prices and inflation eases.
