Central banks play a central role in monetary policymaking and a key operational role in current account management. In countries like India, with capital controls and a structural current account deficit (CAD), these roles elide. The task involves careful policy calibration and skilful deployment of a wide set of tools available for current account management, importantly exchange rate management, but also credit, trade and investment policy. This, therefore, requires a 'whole-of-government' strategy with clearly defined macroeconomic objectives. Much commentary on exchange rate policy is simplistic and polarised. At one extreme, we have those who believe in a 'strong' exchange rate, as evidence of a nation's economic testosterone. While this view is normally weird enough to be dismissed as absurd, it gains credibility because the view from the other extreme-the 'mainstream' of the economics profession-is equally doctrinaire and simplistic.

Increasing the lifetime of products and recycling rates are two ways to reduce the amount of fossil carbon entering waste streams, the researchers suggested.

Human Rights Day every year on December 10 to raise awareness of the basic liberties and rights that every person is entitled to. Each individual has human rights that must be respected irrespectiveive of gender, nationality, ethnicity, race or religion. The day gives an opportunity to recognise the work that has been done and what has to be done to protect everyone's rights. It is a reminder for a call to action, imploring governments, institutions and people everywhere to strive for equality, justice and the defence of human dignity.

MUMBAI : The Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which allows bank account holders to have up to four nominees, marks a significant shift in how money invested in banking products can be managed and distributed after the account holder's demise. The bill, passed by the Lok Sabha on 3 December, says that nominees are only custodians and safekeepers representing the beneficiaries (if there is a testamentary document, e.g., Will/Trust deed) and heirs (in the absence of a testamentary document).
