Typhoon Yagi pounded south China's island province of Hainan with heavy rain and gusty winds, local authorities said Saturday. China has sounded a red alert on Friday and warned of floods in the southern region as Yagi made landfall first in Hainan followed by southern Guangdong province and is expected to hit China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and northern Vietnam. More than one million people have been evacuated in the affected areas with work, classes and businesses suspended and over 100 flights cancelled on Friday, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), which had recently saved 67 lives during cyclonic weather in Gujarat, was forced to make an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea during a rescue operation about 45 km from Porbandar. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Monday while the helicopter was conducting a medical evacuation for a seriously injured crew member aboard the Indian-flagged Motor Tanker Hari Leela, in response to a request from the vessel's Master. The helicopter took off around 11 pm on Monday. As it approached the vessel, the chopper had to make an emergency landing at sea. The Indian Coast Guard has stated that the cause of this emergency landing is still under investigation. The helicopter was carrying four aircrew members. One crew member has been recovered from the crash site, but the search for the remaining three continues. The wreckage of the aircraft has been located.

Dehradun: The trek route to Kedarnath which was heavily damaged by landslides triggered by heavy rain on the night of July 31 has been repaired and reopened for pilgrims after a 15-day closure. The 19-km long route which was blocked at 29 places by landslide debris was restored on Friday, officials here said. Around 260 labourers worked day and night to repair and reopen the route for pilgrims, they said. The route has been repaired now except a couple of spots where security personnel are helping the pilgrims cross the road, they added.

Jacques Cartier bridge in downtown Montreal’s east end were flooded on Friday morning after a major water main break occurred in the area.The water main break forced the evacuation of homes and offices in the area and also led to a boil water advisory for about 150,000 people who reside in the east end of the city.Montreal is still working to determine the cause of the break but officials said the pipe that burst was installed back in 1985 and is about 84 inches.Mayor Valérie Plante said that the water main break “was under control” after many who lived in the area were woken by firefighters who were urging them to get out of their homes because of the “geyser.’Lyman Zhu told the Canadian Press he woke up to what sounded like “heavy rain” and when he looked out his window saw a “wall of water” that was about 10 metres high and the width of the street. “It was insane,” he said.Maxime Carignan Chagnon said the “giant wall of water” gushed for about two hours.
