oil marketing companies (OMCs) Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Tuesday jumped up to 5% on the BSE as Brent crude prices fell to $75 per barrel, falling 3% today. Jagmeet Singh, an alliance partner of Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, has urged the Canadian government to take action against India, focusing on diplomatic sanctions. The diplomatic relationship between India and Canada was already strained for some time in the wake of recent developments related to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. On Monday, Singh expressed support for the Canadian government's decision to expel Indian diplomats. ANI quoted him as saying, «We support today's decision to expel India's diplomats and we're calling on the Government of Canada yet again to put diplomat sanctions against India in place, ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Network (RSS) in Canada, and commit to pursuing the most severe consequences for anyone found to have participated in organized criminal activity on Canadian soil.»

Jharkhand government on Monday approved an increase in payouts in the ongoing ‘Maiyan Samman Yojana’ from Rs 1,000 per month to Rs 2,500 per month. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting on Monday. Under the Maiyan Samman Scheme, the state government is already paying Rs 1,000 per month to 50 lakh women who are 18 years and above in the state since August this year. The increased amount will be given to the beneficiaries starting December. The increase will put a burden of Rs 9,000 crore on the state budget as per government sources. The decision has been taken to counter the Gogo Didi Scheme announced in the BJP manifesto in which the party has promised to pay Rs 2,100 per month to women above 18 years after coming to power.

Microsoft on Monday said that its vice president of GenAI research, Sebastien Bubeck, is leaving the company to join ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. It was unclear what role Bubeck would assume at the Microsoft-backed AI startup. «Sebastian has decided to leave Microsoft to further his work toward developing AGI,» a spokesperson for Microsoft said, adding that the company looks forward to continuing their relationship through Bubeck's work with OpenAI.

Election Commission of India is set to announce Jharkhand and Maharashtra election schedule on Tuesday at 3:30pm, following the conclusion of polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. The current term for the Maharashtra assembly ends on November 26, while the Jharkhand assembly will complete its term on January 5, 2025. In the 2019 elections, Jharkhand conducted polling in five phases, whereas Maharashtra had just one phase. Given the successful conduct of recent elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the commission may implement a quicker polling process in Jharkhand this time around.

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has decided to bring telemarketers under regulatory control and fix accountability, in a significant step as part of a concerted bid by authorities to curb pesky messages and calls. Priced at Rs 9, the plan provides coverage of up to Rs25,000 for a 10-day period, safeguarding users from expenses related to hospitalisation and accidental death due to firecracker accidents. This short-term insurance covers the policyholder and up to four family members, including their spouse and two children. The plan is available for purchase through the PhonePe app and offers immediate coverage starting October 25, 2024. If purchased after this date, the policy will begin from the purchase date. “We are excited to introduce PhonePe’s Firecracker Insurance just in time for the festive season. This coverage offers essential protection for families, ensuring they can celebrate with peace of mind, free from concerns about accidents or unexpected financial strain,” Vishal Gupta, CEO of PhonePe Insurance Broking Services, said.

Skill Development & Entrepreneurship on Monday said it has entered into a partnership with Meta to launch an AI Assistant for the Skill India Mission and establish five centres of excellence in virtual reality and mixed reality. Under the partnership, an innovative AI-powered chatbot powered by Meta's open-source Llama model will be developed to enhance the learner experience on the Skill India Digital (SID) Portal.
