Jharkhand government on Monday approved an increase in payouts in the ongoing ‘Maiyan Samman Yojana’ from Rs 1,000 per month to Rs 2,500 per month. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting on Monday.
Under the Maiyan Samman Scheme, the state government is already paying Rs 1,000 per month to 50 lakh women who are 18 years and above in the state since August this year. The increased amount will be given to the beneficiaries starting December. The increase will put a burden of Rs 9,000 crore on the state budget as per government sources.
The decision has been taken to counter the Gogo Didi Scheme announced in the BJP manifesto in which the party has promised to pay Rs 2,100 per month to women above 18 years after coming to power.
“This is a good decision which will further empower the women of Jharkhand. Our government has always taken the lead when it comes to women empowerment. With the increase, the emolument is the highest offered by any state to women beneficiaries,” Supriyo Bhattacharya, JMM general secretary told ET. “BJP talks about giving Rs 2,100 per month in Jharkhand. But in Odisha, it is offering Rs 840 per month under the Subhadra scheme. This exposes the party’s intention to empower women.”
BJP termed this announcement as a mere promise which won’t be fulfilled.
