Rajasthan: BJP campaign against Ashok Gehlot to focus on women and youth
BJP’s Rajasthan unit plans to raise ‘atrocities on women’, ‘unrest among farmers’ and ‘hopeless youth’ following exam paper leak in recruitment examinations to prepare itself for the yearend assembly elections against the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government. The campaign has been given the theme ‘Nahi Sahega Rajasthan’ (Rajasthan will not tolerate). As part of the programme, the BJP unit organised a protest of women leaders and party workers on Wednesday. BJP Mahila Morcha president Alka Mundra, party MPs Diya Kumar Singh and Ranjeeta Koli led the protest from BJP office to the chief minister’s house. The leaders highlighted incidents of ‘atrocities on women’ and alleged the state has become number one in crime against women. On July 12, BJP will organise a gathering of farmers in Jhunjhunu where senior state leaders will address the gathering. “Congress government had promised a loan waiver. They have not fulfilled the promise and now are capturing the land of farmers,” BJP general secretary incharge of Rajasthan, Arun Singh alleged, while speaking to ET. On July 18, the party will organise a youth protest in Ajmer, where issues related to paper leaks, unemployment allowance and recruitments will be highlighted. Ajmer has been chosen as the protest venue as the Rajasthan Public Service Commission head office is in Ajmer. “We will try to register FIRs and release white paper on paper leaks while carrying out Aakrosh Yatra,” Singh told ET. The party has planned to hold a large public meeting in Jaipur on August 1, where apart from senior state leaders, some national leaders too will address the rally.

An e-euro need not fall victim to post-crypto bubble apathy
The digital euro, like a lot of central bank proposals around the world to issue virtual cash, has so far existed in a policy sweet spot: Maximum imagination, minimal execution. Dreaming up tokens, wallets or ledgers that may future-proof fiat money against the next Bitcoin or stablecoin is easier and cheaper than doing it for real.

India can blend the EU and US models of AI regulation
During his visit to India, Sam Altman once again called for governments worldwide to regulate artificial intelligence (AI). At first glance, this proposition may seem paradoxical. Corporations generally prefer a laissez-faire approach from governments, favouring minimal regulations that allow businesses maximum freedom.

William Watson: An excess profits tax? OK, Mr. Singh, but how about an excess wages tax, too?
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says Canada needs an excess profits tax to help reduce inflation. His argument seems to be that if you let grocery chains and others know they won’t profit from raising prices unfairly, they won’t raise prices unfairly. I don’t know. It doesn’t sound like typical corporate-robber-baron behaviour to me. Why won’t they start raising prices on the grounds their taxes are higher?

Boxer Oleksandr Usyk to defend Unified World Heavyweight Title against Daniel Dubois in Poland
Oleksandr Usyk's promoter, Alex Krassyuk, has confirmed that the Ukrainian boxing star will defend his WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight belts against Daniel Dubois in late August. The fight will take place in Poland at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw. Initially, Usyk was scheduled to face Tyson Fury for an undisputed showdown at Wembley Stadium in April, but negotiations fell through. Now, Usyk is excited about the opportunity to fight in Poland, where he won his first world title seven years ago. He expressed his gratitude to the Polish people for their sincere help to Ukraine, as many Ukrainians have found refuge in the country. In May, Dubois made a change in his training setup, parting ways with Shane McGuigan and now working with Don Charles, who previously trained British heavyweight Derek Chisora. With an unbeaten record of 20-0 (13), Usyk has established himself as the unified champion of the heavyweight division, following back-to-back victories against Anthony Joshua. On the other hand, Daniel Dubois will be fighting for the first time since successfully defending his WBA 'regular' belt with a third-round stoppage of Kevin Lerena in December. Dubois suffered a knee injury and was knocked down three times in the first round of that fight. Since his loss to Joe Joyce in November 2020, Dubois has made a comeback with four consecutive stoppage wins, bringing his professional record to 19-1 (18).
