Jio leads in user growth & market share, Airtel expands 4G, 5G base; Vi continues to struggle: Report
Jio added way more active users than Bharti Airtel in June 2024, but the Sunil Mittal-led telco added more higher-paying 4G and 5G users than its closest rival in that month. Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to lose active users but gained some 3G and 4G users, according to latest telco subscriber data released by the regulator Tuesday. Jio added nearly 4 million active users to Airtel’s modest 0.67 million additions in June, while Vi lost as many as 2.71 million active users, latest customer data put out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) showed. Vi’s heavy losses on this score underlined its continuing inability to fight bigger rivals, Jio and Airtel. As per Trai data, Jio, Airtel and Vi’s active user bases were at 440.94 million, 384.83 million and 188.26 million respectively in end-June.

One year in, EU turning up heat in big tech fight
big tech in the EU, the months ahead could prove a winter of discontent as the bloc wields a fortified new legal armoury to bring online titans to heel. Since August 2023, the world's biggest digital platforms have faced the toughest ever tech regulations in the European Union — which shows no sign of slowing down in enforcing them. Brussels scored its first major victory after forcing TikTok to permanently remove an «addictive» feature from a spinoff app in Europe in August, a year after content moderation rules under the bloc's Digital Services Act (DSA) started to apply.

Why almost nobody is buying green hydrogen
fuel has provoked no end of excitement. From the deserts of Australia and Namibia to the wind-blasted straits of Patagonia, companies and governments worldwide plan to build almost 1,600 plants to make it. The gas can be produced cleanly by using wind- or solar-powered electricity in a process that splits the molecule from water. There’s only one problem: The vast majority of those projects don’t have a single customer stepping up to buy the fuel. Among the handful with some kind of fuel purchase agreement, most have vague, nonbinding arrangements that can be quietly discarded if the potential buyers back out. As a result, many of the projects now touted with great fanfare by countries vying to become “the Saudi Arabia of hydrogen” will likely never get built. Just 12% of hydrogen plants considered low-carbon because they avoid natural gas or mitigate emissions have customers with agreements to use the fuel, according to BloombergNEF. The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.

US election 2024: Has Donald Trump lost key states against Kamala Harris even before November 5?
Kamala Harris has stormed into contention in the fast-growing and diverse states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina, not long after Donald Trump had seemed on the verge of running away with those states when President Joe Biden was still the Democratic nominee. The new polls from The New York Times and Siena College show how quickly Harris has reshaped the terrain of 2024 and thrust the Sun Belt back to the center of the battleground-state map. Harris is now leading Trump among likely voters in Arizona, 50 per cent to 45 per cent, and has even edged ahead of Trump in North Carolina — a state Trump won four years ago — while narrowing his lead significantly in Georgia and Nevada.

Those who give pain can't give medicine: Akhilesh's dig at Keshav Maurya on teacher recruitment
Allahabad High Court's order on assistant teachers' recruitment, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said that those who give pain shouldn't claim to give medicine. In a post on X in Hindi, the SP chief said the «favoured deputy chief minister» was part of the government which snatched reservation from the youth and when they got justice after a long fight, he came forward to show himself as sympathetic. The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers within three months, setting aside the lists issued in June 2020 and January 2022 which included 6,800 candidates. The bench also revised the earlier order and said the reserved category candidates who qualify for the general category merit list should be migrated to that category. In addition, the benefit of vertical reservation should also be extended to horizontal reservation categories, it said.
