Nakul Nath banks on father's legacy in battle for Chhindwara
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath's son Nakul couldn't have expected more odds against him than in this Lok Sabha election, where he is fighting to retain the Chhindwara seat that he had inherited from his father in 2019. The BJP is leaving no stone unturned to corner the lone winner from the Congress camp in the state in the previous general election and his lackadaisical performance in the past five years has aggravated the challenge. Though the BJP has fielded a seemingly lightweight candidate, Vivek Bunty Sahu, who had lost to Kamal Nath in the last two assembly polls, the party is banking on the support of Congress defectors, including one sitting MLA and a former MLA, the Ayodhya Ram temple issue and its own sweep in the 2023 state polls. Nakul Nath is the richest candidate in the first phase of 2024 Lok Sabha polls, with assets worth Rs 716 crore, has largely been an absentee MP, according to locals. His father remains his biggest strength as he did not make much of an impact inside or outside Parliament in the past five years. Locals said the exodus to the BJP from the Congress in Chhindwara was as much on account of the rising graph of the saffron party and the Ram temple issue as it was due to Kamal Nath promoting his son.

Deal activity on the rise in consumer & retail sector
The consumer space also saw 88 PE deals, highest in five quarters by volume. However, the consumer industry reported a decline in M&A activity with volumes declining to 14 deals from 17 a year ago although the value surged to $925 million from $79 million in 2023. «This is potentially an outcome of the impending elections leading the businesses to adopt a cautious approach, coupled with sluggishness in consumer spending, leading to slow revenue growth. However, it evidenced substantial increase in terms of deal value, primarily driven by Tata Consumer Goods' acquisition of Capital Foods valued at $615 million and Organic India valued at $229 million. Together these two deals contributed to a 91% share in M&A values, at $843 million,» said Naveen Malpani, partner and consumer industry leader, Grant Thornton Bharat.

Boardroom Leela: Why are ITC and Hotel Leela at loggerheads?
ITC Ltd, has claimed «oppression» at the hands of the promoters of Hotel Leelaventure Limited (HLV) which runs hotels in India under the Leela brand. ITC says being a minority shareholder its interests are being ignored by HLV. The battle between the two has been raging for the last five years and, of course, HLV has contested claims made by ITC which holds a 7.92% stake in HLV. Since 2008, ITC has been buying shares of HLV from the open market through Russell Credit, its investment arm. In March 2017, after part of HLV's debt was converted into equity, ITC’s shareholding in the hotels chain had dropped from 11.8% to the current level of 7.92%. At that time, JM Financial ARC had converted Rs 275 crore debt into 26% equity in Hotel Leela. How it all began In January 2019, debt-laden HLV Limited went into insolvency under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). HLV had announced in March 2019 that the company's hotel business together with all the assets and liabilities of hotels located in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Udaipur were being acquired by Brookfield on a slump sale basis for ?3,950 crore.

India calls for expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership of UNSC to achieve 'genuine reform'
UN Security Council to make it legitimate, representative, responsive and effective is through the expansion of the its membership in both the permanent and non-permanent categories. India has been at the forefront, especially leading the Global South, demanding reforms in the United Nations and seeking a place as a permanent member of the 15-member UN Security Council. «India is in favour of the expansion of UN Security Council membership in both the permanent and non-permanent categories, as this is the only way to achieve genuine reform of the Security Council and make it legitimate, representative, responsive and effective,» Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India's permanent representative at the UN, said in her remarks in the General Assembly at the sixth round of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform late on Monday. «In a nutshell, we need a reformed Security Council that better reflects the geographical and developmental diversity of the United Nations today. A Security Council where voices of developing countries and unrepresented regions, including Africa, Latin America and the vast majority of Asia and Pacific, also find their due place at the horseshoe table,» she said.

Mutual fund folios doubled in 5 years at 17.79 lakh crore: ICRA Analytics
mutual fund folios have nearly doubled in the last five years and reached 17.79 lakh crore in March 2024, up from 8.97 lakh crore in March 2020. The reasons behind this were increasing awareness and a growing interest among retail investors for parking cash in equities and bonds through the mutual fund route, according to a release by ICRA Analytics. The opening up of branches of fund houses beyond the top 30 towns is also encouraging more people to look at these as a suitable investment vehicle. This is also evident from the surge in the number of folios, said ICRA Analytics. The retail investors account for a major share of the total number of folios. According to the quarterly data on folio and ticket size available on the AMFI website, the retail investors accounted for nearly 91.3% of the 16.49 folios in the industry as on December 2023, at 15.06 lakh crore. The HNIs account for around 8% at 1.33 lakh crore while institutional investors account for less than 1% at 0.11 lakh crore.
