Notorious burglar Parsuram Giri, who preferred to stay at 5-star hotels, nabbed by Odisha police
Bhubaneswar arrested Parsuram Giri, a notorious burglar who had been evading capture for years, on Monday. Giri, known for his extravagant lifestyle, was found to have spent nights in five-star hotels across various metro cities. His arrest comes after he was wanted in connection with at least 21 cases of burglary in the city over the past year. «He usually targeted locked residential buildings in the city. He used to break in through the windows to enter the buildings and steal cash and jewellery. He carried out the burglaries singlehandedly,» said Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda. Giri's modus operandi involved targeting locked residential buildings, breaking in through windows, and stealing cash and jewellery. Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda stated that Giri operated alone, showcasing a high level of skill and daring in his criminal activities.

Xiaomi CEO teases price of company's first car, showrooms begin displaying vehicle
Xiaomi's CEO said on Monday his goal for the firm's first electric vehicle was that it would be the «best looking, easiest to drive and smartest car» priced below 500,000 yuan ($69,424), as the Chinese electronics maker gears up for orders this week. The company will on Thursday evening announce its official price range and start taking orders for the car, dubbed the SU7, with the SU short for Speed Ultra. CEO Lei Jun's comments, made on his official Weibo account, mark the first time the company has confirmed the upper end of its price range. Anticipation for the car has been building up since Xiaomi unveiled the vehicle in December and announced it aimed to become one of the world's top five automakers. Lei has touted it as having technology capable of delivering acceleration better than Tesla cars and Porsche's EVs.

Chirag Paswan's party to declare Lok Sabha poll candidates 'immediately' after Holi
NDA ally Chirag Paswan said his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will declare its candidates for the Lok Sabha polls immediately after Holi. Paswan, whose party has got five of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, also asserted he was «ready for any challenge» that came from his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras. «We will announce all our candidates in a few days… immediately after Holi,» Paswan said on Sunday, but evaded a direct reply to the question of whether he would accommodate Veena Devi and Mehboob Ali Kaiser, sitting MPs from Vaishali and Khagaria, respectively. Both the seats, contested by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party in 2019, have been assigned to the young leader's party this time. The MPs had rallied behind Paras when he split the LJP in 2021, but of late have been repenting that decision and swearing their loyalty towards the late party founder's son.

Buckle up for more volatility: UTI's Vetri Subramaniam
Edited excerpts: I would interpret this as each regulator doing what they are doing in terms of good housekeeping and making sure that rules are followed. Making sure that disclosures are adequate, and processes are in place. I don't know if there is a master plan which is suddenly combining everything together, but I would say each of the regulators in their domain is doing things.

Arrest of Arvind Kejriwal to divert attention from electoral bonds scam: Kerala CM Vijayan
Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday said the electoral bonds scam is the biggest corruption ever witnessed in India and added the BJP government at the Centre arrested his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal to divert attention from the same. Addressing the third consecutive rally organised here by the CPI(M) against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), Vijayan alleged the BJP-led Central government and the Sangh Parivar give scant regard to the rule of the law in the country. He alleged that the Sangh Parivar was trying to take control of the Constitutional institutions and even threatening the country's judiciary. «The Union government, BJP, Sangh Parivar, they all very well know that the Supreme Court order on the electoral bond scam was harmful to them. They wanted to divert the attention from this topic and for that they have arrested Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal,» Vijayan said.

Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi may steer clear of India's new EV policy
India units of luxury car manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi may steer clear of the government’s new electric vehicle (EV) policy, which stipulates a sharp cut in import duty on condition that a $500 million investment is made in local manufacturing. The luxury car makers that have already been present in India for decades would rather accelerate local assembly of EV models in the country as the money will need to be ploughed in within three years of receiving approval under the scheme, said auto executives. The aforementioned companies didn’t officially comment on investments under the new policy. Given that luxury car manufacturers have already invested in India through plants and operations, they don’t see much benefit in another large investment for a segment that’s currently less than 2% of the broader car market. Besides, assembling kits in India already allows for a lower duty structure.

A 5-pointer going into the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings tie at the Chinnaswamy stadium today
BOWL-ERR RCB’s ’24 campaign is just a match old but their bowling was exposed during the 6-wicket defeat to CSK in the IPL opener. The spinners did not have enough resources to exploit a gradually slowingdown pitch as Mayank Dagar, Karn Sharma and Glenn Maxwell bowled five overs between them and managed 37 for 1, without troubling the batters after RCB scored 173 for 6 The RCB pacers blindly followed a shortpitch ball strategy. Mohammed Siraj, Alzarri Joseph, in particular, and Yash Dayal zealously used the quota of two bouncers per over but sacrificed their control over line and length. It reflected in their run-giving rate too — Siraj (9.5), Joseph (10.3), Dayal (9.3)

Why RBI's disproportionate action against fintechs may be bad for business and investor sentiment?
Something analogous is happening in the world of non-banking financial services. In less than five weeks, RBI shut down Paytm Payments Bank, served Visa a cease-and-desist order with regard to card-based vendor payments and P2P transactions, prohibited IIFL Finance from sanctioning new gold loans, and debarred JM Financial from providing finance against shares and debentures, and for new IPOs. Had this been all, one could have excused this as a specific set of actions against a small number of significant players. But the central bank has subsequently also carried out a plethora of audits targeting fintechs that disburse small-ticket personal loans. The stated reason: exuberant unsecured loan growth.

Israel besieges two more Gaza hospitals, demands evacuations, Palestinians say
Israeli forces besieged two more Gaza hospitals on Sunday, pinning down medical teams under heavy gunfire, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, and Israel said it had captured 480 militants in continued clashes at Gaza's main Al Shifa hospital. Israeli forces say hospitals in the Palestinian enclave where war has been raging for over five months have frequently been used as strongholds of Hamas militants harbouring bases and weapons. Hames and medical staff deny this. The Palestinian Red Crescent said one of its staff was killed when Israeli tanks suddenly pushed back into areas around Al-Amal and Nasser hospitals in the southern city of Khan Younis, amid heavy bombardment and gunfire.

Every penny paid on time, FM Nirmala Sitharaman hits back as Karnataka moves SC seeking drought relief
Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday asserted every penny that was due to Karnataka from the Union Government had been paid on time, a day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced moving the Supreme Court over the “five-month delay” in the release of drought relief. The FM, who represents Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, rejected Karnataka’s charge of fiscal bias against the Centre, speaking at an interaction organized by Thinkers Forum in Bengaluru. “The claim that Rs 5,495 crore as a special grant was not released for Karnataka is totally false. The Finance Commission, in its final report, did not recommend any such special grants.”

Lok Sabha Polls: JDS partnership with BJP will help Congress win 20 seats, says Siddaramaiah
Congress in a big way, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Sunday, saying the internal surveys have indicated the party’s win in 20 seats. The CM, who reviewed the poll preparedness in Kodagu-Mysuru and Chamarajanagar seats in Mysuru, said the Congress had an electoral setback in 2019 because of its alliance with the JDS. Since the regional party had now gone with the BJP, the Congress had an electoral edge this time, he added. “We don’t lie like the BJP does and claim we will win all 28 seats,” Siddaramaiah said, answering queries from the media at the Mysuru airport.
