Insurers' STRIPS trade value almost doubles in 10 months
Insurance companies' activity in India's government bond market continues at a tearing pace, with a particular type of favoured debt instrument seeing face value of trades surge 99% on-year from April to January, topping the ₹2 lakh crore mark. The face value of trades of Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal Securities, or STRIPS, in the government bond market has risen to ₹2.32 lakh crore in the first ten months of the current financial year against ₹1.16 lakh crore the same time a year ago, Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) data showed. For FY23, the face value of STRIPS trades was at ₹1.34 lakh crore. «These (STRIPS) are suitable for the needs of insurance companies, as they enable them to manage their asset and liability risks. Life insurance companies, especially under traditional plans, have long-term liabilities, and instruments like long-term STRIPS help them reduce reinvestment risk and also increase the duration of their portfolios,» said Sachin Bajaj, executive vice president & head — investments, Max Life.

Electoral Bond data: Five key takeaways on corporate funding of political parties
electoral bond data offers several insights, but there are at least five key takeaways on the current state of corporate funding of political parties. First, the electoral bond scheme has brought in new entrants into the corporate funding space with the emergence of Future Gaming, Megha Engineering, and Quik Supply Chain Pvt Ltd as top donors to major national and regional political parties. The corporate funding field — as seen largely from reports of electoral trusts submitted to the Election Commission — has so far been dominated by the likes of Bharti Airtel, DLF, Vedanta, ArcelorMittal, Torrent and real estate groups like Navayuga Constructions, besides occasionally the Tata group.

History of 2004 will repeat itself 20 years later: Jairam Ramesh on Lok Sabha polls
Jairam Ramesh on Friday rejected the BJP's claims that the 2024 poll results are a foregone conclusion, saying «tiger mein abhi bahut jaan hai» and the opposition bloc will repeat the history of 2004 when the saffron party was unseated from power despite its 'shining India' campaign. The Congress general secretary in-charge communications also said his party is going into the Lok Sabha polls with its «five nyays» and «25 guarantees», and has full confidence that the opposition INDIA bloc will get a clear mandate. In an interaction at the PTI office here, Ramesh also said the Congress' guarantee is not of one person but of the party and its «ghoshna patra (manifesto)» will be called the «nyay patra» which will focus on Yuva Nyay, Nari Nyay, Shramik Nyay, Kisaan Nyay and Hissedari Nyay and the 25 guarantees under these. Asked if the polls will be about «Modi ki Guarantee» versus the Congress' «nyay» guarantees, he said, «Our guarantee is not of one person. We are giving the Congress guarantee and are giving these guarantees on the basis of our experience.»

mutual fund scheme, retail investors tend to compare the returns given by one scheme vis-à-vis other schemes in the same category in order to maximise their wealth creation. Although historical returns are no guarantee of any scheme’s future returns, still investors prioritise them over an interplay of several factors such as the reputation of fund house, macroeconomic factors and the category of scheme. Returns for a year may not matter much, but when compounding comes into play, the returns over a number of years increase substantially.
