Three US Marines dead after aircraft crashes during drills in Australia
US Marines died Sunday after an Osprey aircraft crashed on a remote tropical island north of Australia during war games, US military officials said. Five Marines had been rescued from the crash site and flown to a hospital in Darwin in a «serious condition», the US officials said, while Australian police said they were triaging the rest of the injured crew at the scene. «There were a total of 23 personnel on board,» US military officials said in a statement. «Three have been confirmed deceased while five others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition.» Rescue efforts were complicated by the location of the crash — the remote and sparsely populated Melville Island about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the Australian mainland. «Recovery efforts are ongoing,» US officials said, adding that an investigation into the cause of the incident had been launched. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as «tragic» and «regrettable» but stressed that authorities were still trying to piece together what happened. «We want to make sure that any information that is provided is absolutely accurate,» he told reporters. The Osprey — a mix between a helicopter and a plane — was taking part in the Predators Run exercises, a joint series of warfighting drills involving thousands of soldiers from the US and Australia, as well as other militaries such as Indonesia and the Philippines. Northern Australia has become an increasingly important staging ground for the US military in recent years, as Washington and Canberra work together to counter China's growing clout in the Asia-Pacific region. — Troubled aircraft — The Osprey aircraft has a troubled history, blighted by a string of fatal crashes over the

Maharashtra: 73 farmers commit suicide in Chandrapur from Jan to July 2023
Maharashtra's Chandrapur district from January to July this year, including 13 last month, as per the district administration data. From 2001 to 2023, 1,148 farmers have ended their lives in the district, including 446 in the last five years, according to the data. A committee comprising the district collector, zilla parishad chief executive officer and superintendent of police had declared 745 farmers, who committed suicide between 2001 and 2022, as eligible for government compensation and 329 deceased cultivators as ineligible, as per the district administration. The district administration had sent a proposal to the government for providing compensation to the kin of the deceased farmers and 48 cases are pending from December 2022, the data said. «We are following guidelines updated in 2006 for providing the compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of farmers who commit suicide,» a senior official from the collectorate said. In case of suicide by farmers, the government provides compensation based on a fixed criteria. For reasons like crop loss, inability to repay loan from nationalised banks/co-operative banks or recognised moneylender, and failure to repay the loan, the kin of farmers will be eligible for a compensation of Rs 1 lakh, out of which Rs 30,000 will be handed over to them, while the remaining amount of Rs 70,000 will be deposited for five years into their accounts, as per the government resolution issued in 2006. A total of 54,514.65 hectares of crops belonging to 64,379 farmers in the district were damaged recently due to the flood in June-July this year, a senior official from the agriculture department said. He said a total of 852 villages were affected due to the flood in the district. Gondpipri

Heat waves becoming more frequent, deadly, study finds
Europe will be particularly affected. Heat waves of the kind we are currently experiencing are particularly deadly for the elderly, the sick and the poor, the researchers said. The 2003 heat wave, which saw temperatures in Europe reach 47.5 degrees Celsius, was one of the worst natural disasters of recent decades, claiming an estimated 45,000 to 70,000 victims in the space of a few weeks, they said. The researchers from ETH Zurich in Switzerland found that such heat waves could become the new norm in the coming years. Since 2013, they have been systematically collecting data on daily heat-related excess mortality for 748 cities and communities in 47 countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the US and Canada. The researchers used this dataset to calculate the relationship between the average daily temperature and mortality for all 748 locations. From this, they were able to establish each location's ideal temperature, where excess mortality is at its lowest.

Saurabh Mukherjea on the positive as well as negative triggers lying ahead of Indian market
Saurabh Mukherjea, Founder, Marcellus Investment Managers, says “the positive trigger is the China play because the scale of China's unwind is such that I find it hard to believe that it will not trigger broader connections in commodity prices and then on to on to inflationary numbers both for America and for India. The negative one in India's case is that we have got so many elections ahead of us. We got five assembly elections through the winter and then obviously the big one in the summer.” What could be the trigger now for the market? Earnings are good. Inflation is benign. Macro will keep on getting ups and downs here but in general is steady. Flows have been decent. The outlook by corporate India is not that bad. So for markets to move higher, what is next?If I have to pick one positive trigger and one negative trigger, the positive trigger is the China play because the scale of China's unwind is such that I find it hard to believe that it will not trigger broader connections in commodity prices and then on to on to inflationary numbers both for America and for India.

Number of micro irrigation schemes increased by 1.42 million between 2013-14 and 2017-18
micro irrigation schemes between 2013-14 and 2017-18, according to latest official census data released on Saturday. The sixth census of minor irrigation (MI) schemes showed that the number of both groundwater and surface water schemes have increased at the national level. Out of 23.14 million MI schemes examined, 21.93 million (94.8 per cent) constitute groundwater schemes, while 1.21 million (5.2 per cent) are classified as Surface Water Schemes. This underscores the substantial reliance on groundwater resources for irrigation needs. There has been a delay in release of the 6th census due to COVID-19 and work on the 7th census has already been started, a senior official said. The census data revealed that Uttar Pradesh claims the largest share of MI schemes, closely trailed by Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Defined as structures within either groundwater or surface water categories with a Culturable Command Area (CCA) up to 2,000 hectares, these minor irrigation schemes have surged by about 1.42 million, according to the latest census. The sixth census records a total of 23.1 million schemes compared to 21.7 million in the fifth census, signifying a 6.9 per cent increase in groundwater schemes and 1.2 per cent in surface water schemes at the national level. The census differentiates between groundwater and surface water categories, including dug wells, shallow, medium, and deep tube wells.
