Super sub Joselu lifts Real Madrid past Bayern and into Champions League final
Bayern Munich had subjected the Spanish champions to the sort of experience Real Madrid have done to so many. They dug in, they frustrated, they scored a crucial goal out of nothing amid favourable refereeing decisions. Real Madrid then threw it all in, including a supposed stand-in.

Polling punches in a Southern state of mind
South during election time and things seem to be a little different here in Chennai from other parts of the country. Unlike in the East-West-North, I don't have any language to speak to people on the street, and my narrow sampling is from the educated, English-speaking class with which I come into contact. But even here, people are calmer, their disagreements articulate. Various kinds of psephological nerdiness are on full display, but without the accompanying rancour one is used to when arguing with say Bengalis, Punjabis or Hindi-belt folks. There's an almost destabilising absence of kinship and/or genitalic cuss words. People down here argue. But they also let the other person actually speak. Like totally weird, da. Everyone agrees that in the behemoth state of Tamil Nadu, things are going to go just as they have in the past. 'They can come and do as many rallies as they want. People will go to see also, because they are crudely entertaining. But as for votes, forget it. Their nonsense has never worked in these parts.'

US: New rules require airlines to automatically refund consumers for cancelled flights
Biden administration on Wednesday issued new rules that require airlines to provide automatic cash refunds to passengers when owed and protect consumers from costly surprise fees. «Too often, airlines drag their feet on refunds or rip folks off with junk fees. It is time Americans got a better deal. Today, my administration is requiring that airlines provide automatic refunds to passengers when they are owed and protect them from surprise fees,» Biden said in a video statement. «This is about airlines treating passengers better and it will save people more than half-a-billion dollars, avoiding unwanted, expensive, unnecessary surprise airline fees,» said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Amar Singh Chamkila: The Elvis of Punjab who was allegedly shot dead by Khalistani militants
Within seconds of the lanky, 5-foot, 10-inch teenager reciting a song written by himself, Shinda knew he had found his «shagird» (a Punjabi word for pupil), and took him in his wings immediately. Dhanni's talent for songwriting in Punjabi and his distinctive voice led to him sharing the stage with renowned folk music artists of that era such as K Deep and Mohammad Sadiq.

'How long are you planning to stay?'- 'another papad?'
Time and tide wait for no man. But boy, is there a tide in the affairs of some men who wait to know every aspect of your time. 'How long are you planning to stay?' has to be in the same league of pointless questions as 'How does the defendant plead?' and 'Bhaiyya, these veggies are fresh, right?' It has the additional virtue of being downright rude. There is a certain candour, even chutzpah, when someone — usually an elderly relative, or a friend of the same age-group — asks things like 'How much is your 'take home'?' or 'What rent do you pay for this place?' I have fobbed off these Buland Darwaza-prying inquiries from non-Enforcement Directorate folks by either shrugging and ho-humming back with 'Oh, it's okay', or 'Some more papad, uncle?' But when faced with those persistent questions about one's itinerary and schedule, the ripostes trip less thick and fast off one's tongue. 'Spacetime' questions outside astrophysics are fundamentally conversation fillers, literally time-pass queries, like talking about the weather (unless you were in Dubai, or went out to vote last week). It also uses time — or, more accurately, temporality — as a crutch to hobble along a tete-a-tete that, unbeknown to the intrusive questioner, is as offensive as the Viet Cong's Tet one. As far as social etiquette goes, 'How long will you be there?' is on a par with asking a lady not just her age, but how long it is till she hits menopause.

Election manifestos: Has the Congress ceded centre space to the BJP?
₹1 lakh every year to a woman member of every poor household. Even if just half the free-food beneficiaries are found to qualify for being under the poverty line, this basic income scheme would cost the exchequer over ₹8 trillion, 16.8% of the interim budget’s entire outlay of ₹47.7 trillion for 2024-25. Yet, how it will be funded finds no mention in its manifesto.

Kumar Gandharva, the lord of the ragas
Raga Nand. Artiste Kumar Gandharva.” Among the ragas, it doesn’t enjoy the popularity of, say, a Darbari or Bhairavi, or Yaman Kalyan. The three mentioned just now are embedded in Indian culture through film songs, bhajans and ghazals, but Nand is an unknown quantity. The radio crackled and the bandish, “Rajan ab toh aaja re/Thiraa na rahat kajraa aakhan mein rajan.” The carefree, imperious and muscular start to this delicate raga grabs the listener from the get-go. The interpretation is incendiary with gossamer touches on a few words like “kajra”. Nand has been sung by other artistes, but Kumar’s version stands alone; nothing quite like it has ever been sung in that raga. Almost like Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction ” or Beatles ’ “Yesterday”; or if you like your analogy classical then Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki’s rendition of Raga Marwa.

Behaviour guru Kahneman's embrace of the irrational enriched rational investors
₹150, say, and if it’s tails, you lose ₹100. Since either outcome is half likely, this punt’s pre-toss expectation value is ₹75 to be won and ₹50 lost—which should make us go for it. Yet, many of us would shrink from it because “losses loom larger than gains." So, while the ₹25 extra on the table is a rational prospect, it may still fail to cover the psychic pain of possibly losing ₹100.

'Unverifiable' is the latest biz buzzword
Zomato's Deepinder Goyal's brainwave of providing 'pure veg' meals is a fab showcasing of an unverifiable service. It has inspired us to come up with other such services that purely depend on taking leaps of faith on the customer's part. Selling a 'box of happiness', for instance, shouldn't be too hard if one provides the box with decent wrapping.
