India sets out to close a critical accounting standard gap to align itself with global peers
NFRA), in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), is urging the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to update a crucial accounting standard to align with revamped international norms, addressing a gap that has existed for over two decades, ToI reported on August 26. On Monday, the NFRA board will deliberate on updating SA 600 to match the International Standard on Auditing 600 (ISA 600), which has undergone revisions in 2009 and 2023. This move follows the NFRA's observation of discrepancies in various cases, including those involving Reliance Capital, IL&FS, DHFL, and Café Coffee Day. The NFRA, responsible for overseeing auditors and audit firms of large and listed companies, initiated discussions in May to update these standards, aiming to close the regulatory gap. Sources have indicated that SA 600 has been particularly contentious. While some chartered accountants argue that smaller firms might be adversely affected, regulatory sources insist that protecting small investors' interests is paramount.

I sell orgasms for a living, claims this Goa-based startup founder whose net worth is nearly Rs 12 crore
Manzuri, describes his work in a straightforward manner: “I sell orgasms for a living.” This statement, shared during an episode of the 1% Club with finance influencer Sharan Hegde, highlights Ritelin’s mission to challenge societal taboos surrounding sexual health in India. Manzuri, a Goa-based wellness startup, focuses on providing pleasure products for women, aiming to address the stigmatized conversations around sexual wellness. Ritelin explained that Manzuri, launched in 2019-2020, entered a market devoid of trustworthy sources for purchasing sex toys. “When we started, there was no player in the market where women could go and find a trustworthy and reliable source to purchase sex toys from,” he said. Due to the lack of recognition for sex toys in India, Ritelin refers to his company as a wellness startup rather than a sex toy company, noting the country's lag in pleasure technology. On the 1% Club video, Ritelin disclosed his financial status, revealing a liquid net worth of Rs 1.5 crore. His non-liquid assets are valued between Rs 8.5 to Rs 9.5 crore. Ritelin owns a 70% stake in Manzuri, which is valued at Rs 12 crore, bringing his total net worth to between Rs 10 to Rs 12 crore. He also shared that his annual expenditure is approximately Rs 40 lakh.

Lower taxes needed to help grow luxury EV segment: Audi India
Audi. Balbir Singh Dhillon, head, Audi India, said while the company is considering introducing more electric car models in the domestic market, and exploring the possibility of assembling them locally, policy continuity is required to make investments viable. He emphasised that subsidies are needed to drive growth in the EV segment, «till the time we reach a decent penetration level». «There is no science behind this; it's just a gut feeling that, maybe by the time we reach 50% EV penetration in the luxury space, we need that support (lower GST) and thereafter, it is driven by itself,» he said.

Nikah without a qazi! Assam approves new law for mandatory registration of Muslim marriages, divorces
Assam cabinet approved the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriage and Divorce Bill, 2024, mandating Muslims to register marriages and divorces with the government. This will eliminate the role of “qazis” in this process, and aims to curb child marriages. The proposed law will be presented in the legislative assembly during the autumn session beginning Thursday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on social media platform X, «Today the Assam Cabinet has approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024. It has two special provisions: Now the registration of Muslim marriages will be done by the government and not by the Qazi” and “registration of child marriage shall be deemed illegal.» District commissioners and registrars will be responsible for keeping the registration records, which are currently held by 94 qazis authorized under a British-era law from 1935. The new bill intends to prevent the registration of marriages involving minors, something that was previously handled by the qazis.

Women entrepreneurs make for prudent borrowers, investing in them is profitable: IndiaP2P’s Neha Juneja
IndiaP2P was founded in 2021 by Neha Juneja as a platform that focuses on empowering women entrepreneurs. With 96% of its borrowers being women leading SMEs, particularly in rural areas, IndiaP2P has grown through partnerships with organisations and microfinance institutions across regions like Nagaland, the southern states, and Maharashtra by providing essential capital to these entrepreneurs. In a chat with ETDigital, Juneja, the CEO and Co-founder of the platform, talks about what she wants to achieve, why IndiaP2P has placed a bet on women entrepreneurs and the role of the regulator in the fintech space. Edited excerpts. Economic Times (ET). When did you start IndiaP2P and what was the idea behind it? Neha Juneja (NJ): We started operations in 2022 with a core thesis that women and small business owners make for prudent borrowers. Investing in them is both profitable and purposeful, given the direct and second-order effects of enabling income expansion, especially for women. Building on this thesis, we now source loans predominantly from women businesses nationwide and curate them for retail lenders to lend to.

Abandon prejudices for women's participation in workforce to rise
International Monetary Fund (IMF) deputy managing director Gita Gopinath recently observed that increasing workplace safety is an important factor in raising women’s participation in the labour force and the workforce (the former makes up for a broader cohort, of those looking for work, in addition to those who are at work and comprise the workforce). This has particular resonance in India right now, given the shock and outrage across the country over the gruesome rape and murder of a medical intern at a Kolkata hospital earlier this month. IMF research shows that closing the gender gap in labour force participation rates (LFPR) can raise gross domestic product (GDP) in developing countries significantly.
