Mamata Banerjee's leter on August 29 is factually incorrect and is a step to cover up delays in setting up fast track special courts for rape cases. In a letter dated August 30, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, said that West Bengal has established 88 Fast Track Courts (FTCs), which are not the same as the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) covered under the Central Government Scheme. «The FTCs are set up and funded by the State Governments in consultation with the concerned High Courts to handle a broad spectrum of cases such as civil cases involving senior citizens, women, children, disabled persons, litigants affected by HIV-AIDS and other terminal illnesses; and civil disputes related to land acquisition and property/ rent disputes pending for over five years including cases of heinous crimes. In the FTCs in West Bengal, a total of 81,141 cases were pending as on 30.06.2024. On the other hand, Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) are specifically dedicated to deal with Rape and POCSO Act cases. lnspite of pendency of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases in West Bengal, the State has not operationalized additional 11 FTSCs which may be exclusive POCSO Courts or combined FTSCs dealing with both Rape and POCSO cases, as per the State's requirement,» she added.

Volt Typhoon has breached four US firms, including internet service providers, and another in India through a vulnerability in a Versa Networks server product, according to Lumen Technologies Inc's unit Black Lotus Labs. Their assessment, much of which was published in a blog post Tuesday, found with «moderate confidence» that Volt Typhoon was behind the breaches of unpatched Versa systems and said exploitation was likely ongoing. Versa, which makes software that manages network configurations and has attracted investment from Blackrock Inc and Sequoia Capital, announced the bug last week and offered a patch and other mitigations.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the registration of Lucknow-headquartered Margdarshak Financial Services Ltd over high net NPAs and defaults on repayment to lenders. As on March 31, 2021, the company failed to maintain the minimum regulatory net owned fund of Rs 5 crore and minimum capital adequacy ratio of 15 per cent stipulated for NBFC-MFI, the RBI said, while cancelling its certificate of registration. As per the statutory audit, as on March 31, 2021, the NBFC was facing cash flow issues and defaulted on repayment of Rs 49.27 crore to its lenders. «Further, the auditors have observed that due to losses (Rs 187 crore) and high net NPAs (Rs 82.37 crore) there is material uncertainty which casts significant doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern,» the central bank said.

The relaxed norms are aimed at encouraging seaplane operations under the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). Generally, seaplanes are amphibian aircraft that can take off and land on the sea. Under the relaxed norms of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), there will be no need for a waterdrome license and compliance requirements have also been reduced.

Last week, TRAI directed telcos to disconnect all telecom resources of unregistered telemarketers found making spam calls, and to blacklist them for up to two years.

Central Water Commission (CWC) is charting a new course with its Vision 2047, focusing on addressing the evolving challenges posed by climate change, its Chairperson Kushvinder Vohra said. In a conversation with PTI, Vohra outlined the commission's strategic plan, which is divided into short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals aimed at bolstering India's water management infrastructure. «We are creating Vision 2047 for ourselves, keeping in view the challenges, especially climate change, which has led to new emerging issues,» Vohra said. He said the strategy involves a comprehensive approach to deal with the immediate, medium, and long-term needs of water management in the country.
