In charts: Volatile vegetables are making inflation bitter
NEW DELHI : Vegetable prices are once again burning a hole in people’s pockets and pushing retail inflation up. If not for double-digit vegetable inflation, the headline inflation in June would have remained below the Reserve Bank of India’s medium-term mark of 4% since January, Mint calculations show.

Fed could cut rates by 25 bps in July, another 50 bps to follow in September: Moody’s
Moody’s expects the Federal Reserve to begin policy easing with a 25 basis points (bps) cut as early as in the 30-31 July meet. “The CPI data confirms our view that the hotter-than-expected inflation prints in the first quarter were from one-time price adjustments at the start of the year. The rapidity with which the labour market has cooled suggests that the drag from tight monetary policy is growing. If the Federal Open Market Committee decides to hold the federal funds rate at the current 5.25-5.50% in the July meeting, the labour market will likely weaken further, raising the chance of a larger 50 bps cut in September,” said Madhavi Bokil, Senior Vice President at Moody’s Ratings.

Third Eye: Trying to turn the tables, headlines to get attention, and skydiving to boost tourism
Trying to turn the tables: The Mahayuti (grand alliance) was in disarray after the Lok Sabha fiasco, but the state government, eyeing the assembly polls, has rolled out various initiatives, including free power to farmers and Rs 1500 to women each month. In the assembly, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde mocked the opposition by saying they would be constructing additional hospitals in the state to treat all the opposition leaders for their «stomach ache» caused by all the new programmes they had implemented. Headlines to get attention Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP, is always surrounded by reporters because he frequently provides bytes and statements that create headlines. Raut is aware of this, which is why, on Friday, when he saw the BJP's Chandrakant Patil at the assembly premises, he drew Patil towards him and suggested that the two come together again. Raut's statements were a brilliant word play for the media, which tried to figure out whether Raut was advocating that the BJP and UBT reunite again. Raut later stated, while speaking to the media, that nothing should be interpreted from his statements.

Telcos' tariff hikes to push up core inflation by 0.2 pc in FY25: Report
tariff hikes of over 20 per cent by the country's top three telcos will push up core inflation by 0.20 per cent in FY25, a foreign brokerage said on Wednesday. Analysts at Deutsche Bank also upped their core inflation or the price rise, excluding food and fuel, by 0.20 per cent to 3.8 per cent. Apart from the tariff hikes, the below-trend monsoon rains will be another factor that will be of focus from an inflation trajectory perspective, they said. The report said the impact of telecom tariff hikes will start getting reflected from July, and the hikes will alone push the month-on-month core inflation by over 0.85 per cent month on month.

If you’re thinking of exiting the bull market, read this Similarly, the other call was to stop new money flows, leaving current investments intact. In fact the fund manager said in the same note, “The valuation and growth prospects for our portfolio companies look reasonable, and we will continue to hold them." He went on to say it was difficult to find new ideas, adding, “Our offshore fund, which is currently in a very nascent stage, will continue to accept funds." Underneath the scary headline, the situation was that a research house, at worst, couldn’t find new ideas. The fund manager owned stocks at reasonable valuations.

View: Indian banks know climate is their biggest threat
Reserve Bank of India reviews the stability of the country’s financial system. Its latest report made for good headlines: The proportion of loans that have gone sour is at a multiyear low, and likely to decline further. But buried in the report is a warning from the very institutions the central bank is charged with regulating. Market participants responded to a survey asking what they saw as the biggest contributors to systemic risk. While they downplayed the usual concerns — asset quality, interest rate risk, capital outflows — one particular threat loomed larger than ever before: climate change. In fact, respondents named it for the first time as the greatest source of systemic risk to the Indian financial system. They’re not wrong to worry. It isn’t just that India, according to the Network for Greening the Financial System, will see sharply lower growth unless temperature rises are controlled. That growth will be more variable and subject to sharper shocks, including those from weird weather and delayed monsoons. This worries the country’s financial arteries; so does the uncertain fate of sectors such as construction, cement and energy, to which they are deeply exposed.

2024 Presidential Election: Is Kamala Harris distancing herself from Joe Biden while Congressional Black Caucus backs president?
Vice President Kamala Harris distancing herself from Joe Biden though she has hit the campaign trail for the incumbent president and the Democrat contender for the 2024 US Presidential Election? She tops the list of the probables if Biden pulls out of the race for the White House. This question was being asked because though she is campaigning for the Democrats, she mentioned Joe Biden's name only once in her about half an hour interview with 'Essence Fest'. The black women’s magazine held the event on Saturday in New Orleans. Kamala Harris has hit the headlines and many fellow Democrats have put pressure on Biden to withdraw and allow the vice president to challenge Republican contender Donald Trump since his reportedly pathetic performance on the June 27 presidential debate.

Wings of Change: Wingers Williams and Yamal have made Spain the team to beat at Euro
Yamal seemed to become the face of this Spain side heading into Euro 2024. For one it’s his youth, of course — a star at just 16. There’s also the potential for so many storylines, with his birthday the day before the final itself. And while Lamal has the headlines and the highlights, it’s his teammate on the opposite flank, Nico Williams, who has been growing into the tournament in seriously impressive fashion, enough so that he now looks perhaps the most important key to them getting past tough upcoming op-ponents, in pursuit of a third European Championship success in the space of just 16 years. Williams’ performance in the 4-1 win over Georgia speaks for itself: an assist for the equaliser, the third goal to make sure of the victory and — quite incredibly for a forward against such an aggressive and front-footed defence — not a single misplaced pass. Oh, and his birthday is one day be-fore Yamal’s, too.
