In FY14, the headline inflation in the country stood at 9.4%. In a matter of 10 years, the headline inflation has dropped to 5.5% in FY24, according to data provided by the Ministry of Finance.

Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) increased mobile tariffs by 11-20% and 10-23%, respectively, to boost average revenue per user (ARPU), a day after Reliance Jio announced higher rates, making this the first wide-ranging headline price increase since November 2021. While Airtel and Jio — which dominate the market — say they need to improve returns after paying high prices for 5G airwaves in 2022, Vi is looking to back up its recent ₹23,000 crore equity fundraising efforts as it strives to become more competitive, stem user losses and repair a stressed balance sheet to pay vendors and statutory dues. Analysts said the three telcos will see a 13-17% rise in ARPU with the main effect being felt in second and third quarters of this fiscal year. Airtel and Vi have been vocal about increasing ARPU at an industry level for a sustainable telecom sector.

Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio bought spectrum worth ₹11,340 crore in the just-concluded spectrum sale, which will be paid to the government in 20 annual instalments. The first instalment is likely to be in the range of ₹500-570 crore for all three carriers combined. The selective and strategic purchases indicate a focus on monetizing existing investments into spectrum before spending on additional capex.

Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee have flagged worries relating to price worries in coming months owing to 'exceptionally' warm summer months experienced across the country, as per the Minutes of the June meeting released on Friday. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das opined that retail inflation in India would moderate to an average of 4.5 per cent in FY25, higher than the target of 4 per cent. «In the immediate months, however, the impact of exceptionally warm summer months on output of certain perishables; a likely rabi production shortfall in some pulses and vegetables – particularly potatoes and onions; and the upward revisions in milk prices, warrant close monitoring,» Das said.
