If India’s economy is emerging fast, shouldn’t the value we place on lives be going up too?
At first glance, this may seem like a question for economists and statisticians, a matter of compensation data, actuarial logic and policy benchmarks. It is nothing of the sort. It is a moral question that we in India must ask ourselves. As a citizen who has lived his entire life in India’s metropolitan cities, benefited from a measure of material success and travelled globally, my conclusion is neither emotional nor ideological.

PE firm Kedaara Capital emerges front-runner to buy majority stake in Tynor Orthotics
₹3,500–4,000 crore with existing investor Lighthouse Funds and the promoters set to offload a total of about 60% of their holding,” one of the people cited above said. A second person confirmed the details, adding that this will largely be a secondary transaction. This assumes significance as fast-growing, consumer-facing healthcare companies are attracting strong investor interest, backed by rising insurance penetration, improving affordability and a widening patient base in India’s medical devices sector. In August, Mint first reported that the company had reopened talks and appointed O3 Capital to help with the mandate after discussions with Temasek for a significant minority stake were put on hold in 2024.Tynor’s founder Pushvinder Jit Singh, Lighthouse Funds, Kedaara and O3 Capital did not respond to emails sent on Tuesday. In 2024, Mint had exclusively reported that Singapore-based Temasek was the front-runner to acquire a significant minority stake in the company, outpacing other global private equity firms such as Warburg Pincus and Norwest Venture Partners. The new development comes nearly eight years after Tynor raised $21 million at a post-money valuation of $103.3 million from investors including Lighthouse, Thuasne and Vihome B.V.

No ice, no toothpaste: Govt rolls out evidence-based treatment protocols for burn injuries
New Delhi: To reduce India’s high burn-related mortality rates and standardise care across hospitals, the Centre has issued comprehensive treatment guidelines that formalise first-aid practices and discourage the use of common household remedies, according to two officials and a document seen by Mint. The development assumes significance given the rising burn injuries—an estimated 6-7 million injuries annually and around 150,000 deaths each year—with women and children disproportionately affected due to cooking fires and flammable liquids. The new framework, to be adopted by health centres with immediate effect, seeks to replace India’s fragmented, hospital-specific burn care protocols with a uniform, evidence-based system ranging from first responders, primary health centres (PHCs) and tertiary hospitals. The guidelines organise burn care into four levels—pre-hospital, primary, secondary and tertiary—clearly outlining responsibilities at each stage to reduce delays, inappropriate treatment and avoidable complications. They address a critical gap where healthcare professionals often relied on a mix of personal expertise and conflicting protocols due to resource constraints. The effectiveness of burn care in India has been constrained by chronic shortages of trained personnel, essential supplies and specialised equipment, gaps that are most acute in resource-limited settings, impacting patient recovery and complication rates."Standard treatment guidelines are vital because medical science is evidence-based, yet currently, individual hospitals often follow disparate protocols. It is crucial to collate best practices to ensure uniformity," said Dr.

More than accessories: Smartwatches are now becoming health devices with medical certification
Smartwatches are getting smarter – at least, health-wise.These devices, so far largely considered lifestyle accessories with basic fitness-tracking features mostly shunned by medical practitioners, are increasingly receiving medical certifications from the Centre—making them health devices that alert users against issues such as heart rate fluctuations, sleep disorders and blood pressure anomalies. On 4 December, Apple launched hypertension tracking on its latest Apple Watch Series 11 smartwatch. While the feature does not give a direct blood pressure readout, it monitors a user’s blood oxygen, stress levels and other heart-related parameters to notify them that they may have a potential hypertension issue. The company received government approval to offer this clinical-grade feature in late November, a person aware of the development told Mint, making it only the second consumer-grade smartwatch until now to be approved by New Delhi.Hypertension implies high blood pressure, a condition that potentially damages heart tissues in the long run.
