NEET-UG 2024 has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for comprehensive investigation, said Education Ministry officials on Saturday. This comes after National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Subodh Singh was shunted out today, amid a massive controversy that has erupted over exams NEET and NET. An official said he has been put on «compulsory wait» in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) till further orders. India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) Chairman and Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola has been assigned additional charge of the testing agency till appointment of a regular incumbent.

Karnataka police have decided to ask the Income Tax department to join the investigation into Renukaswamy murder case in view of huge money involved in execution of the crime. Kannada actor Darshan, his friend Pavithra Gowda, and 15 others have been arrested for abducting and brutally torturing Renukaswamy of Chitradurga to death on June 8. According to police, Darshan and his gang have so far spent Rs 78 lakh to cover up the crime and destroy material evidences. «There is lot of money involved and we don't know how much money they would have raised through unfair means to get rid of this case. Hence, we have decided to include the I-T department in the case,» a police officer said. So far cash to the tune of Rs 70.4 lakh has been seized from the actor, while Rs 7.6 lakh is yet to be recovered. During the investigation, police found Darshan's involvement and subsequently the entire case came out in open.

Supreme Court seeking directions to the CBI and the ED to investigate alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam NEET-UG held on May 5. The petition, filed by 10 students who had appeared for the exam, has also sought a direction to Bihar Police to expedite the investigation in the case and file a report before the apex court. «The petitioners are fully aware of the ramifications of the cancellation of the examination but there is absolutely no other alternative. »The NEET UG Examination of 2024 had many other irregularities, in particular, the gross negligence on the part of the authorities to make the question papers available to the candidates on time. In some places, the wrong set of question papers was distributed and later recalled," the plea said.

health ministry reported that 143 people across India had succumbed to heatstroke this summer, based on confirmed data from states as of June 20. However, numbers collected by TOI from state governments indicate 209 confirmed heat-related deaths, in addition to 239 suspected deaths, totaling 448 confirmed and suspected fatalities this season. The health ministry's data shows Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of such deaths at 35, followed by Delhi with 21 deaths. Rajasthan and Odisha each reported 17 fatalities due to heatstroke. Ministry sources suggest that the death toll may increase as investigations into some suspected heatstroke-related deaths are ongoing. According to TOI's data, Delhi has recorded 76 heat-related deaths so far, marking the highest confirmed toll in the country. These figures were compiled from various government hospitals in the capital. Uttar Pradesh's Relief Commissioner Office reported 51 confirmed heat-related deaths, with an additional 65 suspected heat-related fatalities, including 51 in Ghaziabad district and 14 in Noida district.
