Arif Abubakar Shaikh, also known as Arif Bhaijaan, the brother-in-law of fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel and an accused in a terror-funding case, passed away on Friday evening at Mumbai's J J Hospital. Shaikh, 61, a businessman, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a case involving several members of the Dawood gang, including Dawood Ibrahim and Shakeel themselves.
Shaikh was arrested in May 2023 and was lodged in Arthur Road jail. He was undergoing treatment at J J Hospital when he died. In July 2023, the NIA attached his property in Mira Road area in Thane district as proceeds of terrorism.
Shaikh, who has two daughters, reportedly did not have any prior health concerns. His relative, Arif Khan, stated, «He had no trouble and was in the pink of health. The authorities are not telling us anything, and we gathered the information from JJ Hospital.»
Shaikh and his brother Shabbir Shaikh were accused of playing an active role in extorting large sums of money for the D-Company's terrorist activities. They were also allegedly involved in acquiring assets to raise terror funds and collaborating with international terrorist organizations.
