Companies bribed political parties through electoral bonds to secure projects: Prashant Bhushan
Prashant Bhushan on Sunday alleged that companies used electoral bonds to bribe political parties to secure projects worth lakhs of crores of rupees. He said a petition has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking an independent probe by a special investigation team (SIT) into the alleged nexus between political parties and companies for corruption through electoral bonds. «The Rs 16,500 crore electoral bond donations that companies gave to political parties were merely bribes or kickbacks in exchange for which contracts or projects worth lakhs of crores were given to the companies in quid pro quo arrangements,» Bhushan alleged in a press conference here. Bhushan and social activist Anjali Bhardwaj were in Ranchi as part of their awareness campaign regarding electoral bonds and bringing transparency in political funding. Bhushan said they have visited 11 states before Jharkhand.

A broken marriage, a big inheritance and the murder of an art kingmaker
THE LEGENDARY New York art dealer Brent Sikkema was tangled up in an ugly divorce when he got on a plane to Rio de Janeiro before Christmas last year, looking for a fresh start. With its beaches and bossa nova, Rio offered an escape, a rollicking hot spot where the 75-year-old hoped to unwind and have some fun. Brent had long held sway over a cerebral corner of the New York art scene, promoting women and diverse artists in the early 1990s when few galleries or museums exhibited either.

Dabholkar case: Not happy with verdict, says Prithviraj Chavan; dubs Sanatan Sanstha 'terrorist' outfit
Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has said he was not happy with the court verdict in the Dr Narendra Dabholkar murder case and asserted that right-wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha was a "terrorist organisation" whose role in the killing of the renowned rationalist has not been made clear. A special court for UAPA cases in Pune on Friday convicted and sentenced two men to life imprisonment and acquitted three in the case. Dr Dabholkar (67), an anti-superstition crusader, was shot dead while on a morning walk on a bridge near the Omkareshwar temple here on August 20, 2013. The special court convicted Dabholkar's two assailants — Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalaskar — and sentenced them to life imprisonment, but acquitted three others — ENT surgeon Dr Virendrasinh Tawde, Sanjeev Punalekar and Vikram Bhave — for want of evidence. «I am not happy with the judgment. What is the role of the Sanatan Sanstha and who is the mastermind of the murder has not been made clear. Similarly, (it has not been made clear) if there is a link between Dabholkar's killing and the murders of Govind Pansare and Gauri Lankesh,» Chavan said on Friday.

Biden administration on Friday said Israel's use of U.S.-supplied weapons may have violated international humanitarian law during its military operation in Gaza, in its strongest criticism to date of Israel. But the administration stopped short of a definitive assessment, saying that due to the chaos of the war in Gaza it could not verify specific instances where use of those weapons might have been involved in alleged breaches. The assessment came in a 46-page unclassified State Department report to Congress required under a new National Security Memorandum (NSM) that President Joe Biden issued in early February.
