Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently summoned Dabur India chairman Mohit Burman as part of its investigation into an alleged money laundering case related to the open offer made by the Burman family to the shareholders of Religare Enterprises (REL). SC: Bail is rule, jail exception' applies even to UAPA offences
jail is an exception" legal principle is applicable even to offences under special statutes like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday while granting bail to a man accused of harbouring suspected terrorists. A bench of justices Abhay Oka and Augustine George Masih said once a case has been made out for the grant of bail to an accused, the court cannot decline the relief. «When a case is made out for a grant of bail, the courts should not have any hesitation in granting bail. The allegations of the prosecution may be very serious. But, the duty of the courts is to consider the case for grant of bail in accordance with the law. 'Bail is the rule and jail is an exception' is a settled law,» SC said. The verdict came while ordering the release of a retired police constable Jalaluddin Khan, who was booked under the stringent provisions of the anti-terror law and those of the now defunct Indian Penal Code for renting out the upper floor of his house to alleged members of the banned Popular Front of India.

rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Actress-politician Kangana Ranaut was one of the few public figures who lent her voice to the ongoing campaign, demanding justice for the victim. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ actress called the crime “horrific” and demanded the CBI investigate the case. She also asked the government to show the rapist no mercy. “Murder of a trainee woman doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is horrible and horrific. Delhi: How the transfer of an officer uncovered a massive GST fraud involving 500 fake companies
Delhi government's anti-corruption branch (ACB) has arrested seven individuals, including a suspended GST officer, three advocates, two transporters, and a proprietor of fake firms, for their alleged involvement in a GST fraud racket. The fraud involved fraudulent GST refunds that amounted to approximately Rs 54 crore, and forged invoices totaling Rs 718 crore were discovered. The operation uncovered nearly 500 non-existent firms, which appeared to be engaging in business activities solely on paper to claim the fraudulent refunds, a TOI report stated. Officials have pointed to significant procedural lapses and malpractices by the arrested GST officer, Babita Sharma, who has since been suspended. The fraudulent refunds were reportedly approved without proper verification of input tax credit, which has resulted in a substantial loss to the government’s exchequer. ACB Chief Joint Commissioner Madhur Verma highlighted the nature of the fraud:
