Patna High Court L Narasimha Reddy on Tuesday withdrew from the one-man Commission of Inquiry set up by the Telangana government to look into the role of ex-chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in alleged irregularities in the power sector during his tenure. The top court, which was hearing the plea of the former Telangana chief minister alleging bias against the head of the inquiry panel, was informed by the counsel of Justice (retd) Reddy that he does not want to be part of the commission. Delhi High Court has allowed a 31-year-old woman to undergo medical termination of her pregnancy of over 32 weeks due to the foetus's abnormalities, which posed a substantial risk of physical and mental handicap. Justice Sanjeev Narula, allowing the woman's plea seeking permission to undergo an abortion, said the continuation of the pregnancy poses a significant risk to the petitioner's physical and mental health and is likely to result in the birth of a child with severe health issues. The judge, following a report given by the doctors of AIIMS, concluded that permitting the termination of the pregnancy was in the best interest of both the petitioner and the foetus. «In the opinion of the court, the diagnosis in the present case clearly qualifies as substantial foetal abnormality with substantial risk of physical and mental handicap,» the court said in its order passed on July 13.

Supreme Court on Monday agreed to consider listing a plea against a «scientific survey» of "Bhojshala", a medieval-era structure in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district which both Hindus and Muslims claim as their own. A petition was filed in the top court by the Maulana Kamaluddin Welfare Society challenging the March 11 order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court for a «scientific survey» of the shrine to ascertain it belonged to which community. In its March 11 order, the high court order had directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out a survey of the Bhojshala complex within six weeks. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti agreed to consider listing the matter after advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for the Hindu petitioners, submitted that the ASI has already filed its report.

Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on July 15 a plea of BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao challenging a Telangana High Court order dismissing his plea to declare as «illegal» the constitution of a commission to inquire into the alleged irregularities in the power sector during his tenure as the state's chief minister. As per section 32 of the Act, the legislative assembly may make laws with respect to any of the matters enumerated in the state list, except the «police» and «public order», or the concurrent list in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India.

Chief Justice of India Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Saturday said law students should be well-versed with regional languages and laws so that people's access to the legal system can be improved. Addressing the third convocation of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the importance of imparting legal education in «easy language», asserting that it is currently a shortcoming in the legal profession. Citing an analysis done by the research department of the Supreme Court on 81 universities and colleges, the CJI said, «It was found that common people experience hurdles in understanding their rights and schemes meant for them as they do not know English.» «This means that in law universities, legal education is imparted English, and many times, students at legal aid centres are not able explain legal procedures to the common people in regional languages,» he said.

The central government is aiming to make the tribunal functional by the end of November and has already initiated the process of shifting anti-profiteering cases to the GSTAT principal bench from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). «We are putting all efforts to make the principal bench operational by the end of November and the process of selection and appointment will start immediately after the budget,» a senior government official told ET. Separately, a technical team is working on a dedicated online portal for electronic filing of appeals, officials said, adding that the portal will be ready by September.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has amended the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 enhancing some powers of the Lieutenant Governor of the erstwhile state. President Droupadi Murmu has given her approval to the amendments in the rule exercising the powers conferred by section 55 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, (34 of 2019) read with the Proclamation dated 31st October 2019 issued under section 73 of the Act, a notification issued by the MHA mentions. The President made the rules further to amend the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019.

Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a Gujarat High Court order asking the state government to resume the process of taking back nearly 108 hectares of grazing land given to an Adani Group entity in 2005 near the Mundra port. A bench of justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan took note of the appeal of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd that the impugned order is required to be stayed in the interest of justice. «Issue notice. Stay of impugned order,» the bench said. On July 5, the state government had informed the high court that it will take back nearly 108 hectares of 'gauchar' (grazing) land which was given to an Adani Group entity in 2005.
