Microsoft outage: Should the power of one of the world’s most sophisticated tech company be curtailed?
global IT outage for the last few days has turned out to be the biggest technological crisis in history. The outage has also revealed the excessive dependency on a single company, Microsoft, that has now come into question, after banks, airlines, and various other important administrative services took a major hit. Even police authorities were not able to man their 911 lines and operations in various countries in the West due to the IT outage, begging the question why Microsoft has become the epicenter of all administrative activities.

Being chivalrous is being kind, that's it
social interactions, kindness and politeness have taken a backseat, thanks to the overzealous knight in shining armour, 'chivalry'. Once upon a time, holding doors open and offering seats were acts of decency. But now, these gestures are often viewed through the murky lens of gender politics, transforming simple acts of kindness into patronising, patriocratic statements. Chivalry, with its roots in perceptions of helping out 'helpless' women, is still seen as directed towards women.

India staring at infertility crisis, may alter population dynamics, says top IVF chain Founder
population dynamics, potentially leading to an ageing crisis, Dr Ajay Murdia, the man behind India's one of the largest fertility chain, Indira IVF, has said. Talking to PTI ahead of the World IVF Day on July 25, Dr Murdia said that India stands at a critical crossroads, facing an unprecedented infertility crisis that threatens not only millions of families but the country's future demographic balance. «According to some estimates, about 27.5 million married couples are actively trying to conceive and are suffering from infertility. But only about 275,000 IVF cycles are performed every year,» he said. «This silent epidemic, affecting one in six couples, is rapidly evolving into a national emergency with far-reaching consequences for India's societal structure and economic prospects,» Murdia, Founder and Chairman of Indira IVF, said.

UP Kanwar Yatra order: Both Muslim and Hindu owners ask staff to quit, small dhabas fear hit to income
Kanwariyas. He would get Rs 400-600 and at least two meals every day for the job. This year, however, his employer, Mohammad Arsalan, asked him to look for other jobs as he cannot afford to hire extra staff, expecting that his earnings will take a hit due to the Uttar Pradesh government's orders to owners of hotels, restaurants, food carts and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners at their outlets. After the Muzaffarnagar Police issued the order, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday extended the controversial order across the state. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said similar instructions are already in place in his state as well.

The (too) warm-blooded genius of Truman Capote
Truman Capote. Dharamvir Bharati comes close with his deft handling of narrative nooks and crannies, most evident in his 1952 short novel 'Suraj ka Satvan Ghoda'. But Capote is still better, because he was self-taught. Born dirt poor in the American South, he was raised by two maiden aunts in Alabama and had one close friend in childhood, Harper Lee, who too would grow up to be a prominent novelist. In Lee's 1960 classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, Capote appears as the character, Dill. In the late 50s and early 60s, when Capote was writing In Cold Blood, Lee offered to be his research assistant and minder when they were in Kansas following the Clutter family murder trials on which the book is based. The 2005 movie Capote, with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the eponymous role, captures the relationship wonderfully. While Capote never fully acknowledged Lee's role in the book, many of her observations about town folk, their routines and prejudices made In Cold Blood the true crime classic it is.

Special Court acquits man in 37-year-old corruption case
Surendra Singh Ahluwalia was acquitted in a 37-year-old corruption case by special judge Anil Antil on July 12, reported TOI. «Delay by any stakeholder or cog in the dispensation of the criminal justice system, be it by the investigating agency or by the unscrupulous devices adopted by the accused, not only causes miscarriage of justice, but the delay also becomes an instrument of inflicting a fatal blow on the efforts of justice dispensation,» said Justice Antil. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 1987 filed an FIR against Ahluwalia, who was at the time the chief secretary of Nagaland and three others — V Bhaskaran, manager of Bank of Baroda, Coimbatore, Inderjit Singh, Ahluwalia’s brother and Bank of Baroda manager in Kohima, and Nyamo Lotha for fraud, destruction of evidence, corruption and other crimes.
