Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in straight sets to claim back-to-back Wimbledon titles
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Wimbledon men’s final Sunday to collect his fourth Grand Slam title at age 21. It was a rematch of last year’s championship match on the grass of the All England Club, which Alcaraz won in five sets. This one — played in front of a Centre Court crowd that included Kate, the Princess of Wales, in a rare public appearance since announcing she has cancer — was much easier for Alcaraz, at least until he stumbled while holding three match points as he served for the victory at 5-4 in the third set.

Melania Trump, wife of Donald Trump, issues statement on shooting attempt
Melania Trump, the wife of former US President Donald Trump, has issued a statement on the attack on his husband. «When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron's life, were on the brink of devastating change. I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband,» she said in the statement. «To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me. The winds of change have arrived. For those of you who cry in support, I thank you. I commend those of you who have reached out beyond the political divide — thank you for remembering that every single politician is a man or a woman with a loving family,» the statement added.

Shooting at Trump rally comes at volatile time in American history
Donald Trump clutched his right ear as blood spurted out, then ducked for cover as supporters screamed and Secret Service agents raced to surround and protect him. Within moments, someone shouted «shooter down,» and the agents, agitated but in control, began moving Trump offstage to safety. «Wait, wait, wait, wait,» he called out, then made a point of pumping his fist at the crowd and seemed to defiantly shout, «Fight! Fight!» The crowd roared and responded with chants of «USA! USA!» For the first time in more than four decades, a man who was elected president of the United States was wounded in an assassination attempt when a gunman who appeared to have crawled onto a nearby roof opened fire at Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening. The explosion of political violence came at an especially volatile moment in American history and further inflamed an already stormy campaign for the White House.

Exploring culinary contrasts: Into the intriguing world of salads
old Goa cafes, like Aram in Panjim, you will find a dish of onions, tomatoes and a few spices, cooked into the gravy that serves as a base for many Indian dishes. Here it’s served by itself, with pao or puri, under the odd name of ‘salad bhaji’. There is an echo here of Colonel Kenney-Herbert in his magisterial Culinary Jottings for Madras (1878) when he declares: “An excellent salad is that made by slicing raw ripe tomatoes with a Bombay onion.” He admits that “no man would partake of [it] just before a ball, or on his wedding day” for fear of the smell of raw onions on h is breath. But combining savoury-sweet tomatoes and pungent onions clearly has real culinary value, whether sliced as he suggests, diced like a kachumber, pulverised salsastyle or even cooked in salad bhaji. Defining salad is surprisingly hard. In Judith Weinraub’s Salad: A Global History (2016), she struggles to connect salads, which are usually served cold, but can also be warm; which are served alongside main dishes or as a separate course or even a meal in itself; that are mostly made of leafy greens or other vegetables, but also eggs and meat; that usually have a liquid dressing, but can also just be plain cut vegetables — and let’s not forget fruit salad!

Novak Djokovic is 37 and had knee surgery last month but faces Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final
Novak Djokovic was far from convinced he could win Wimbledon when the tournament began less than a month after his surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. «I was just thinking about moving well (and) not injuring myself,» he said. After getting through his first few matches at the All England Club, though, Djokovic thought: «OK, I'm actually playing close to my best, and I can have a shot at the title.» Now he's just one victory away from what would be an eighth championship at Wimbledon — equaling Roger Federer for the most by a man — and a 25th Grand Slam trophy overall, more than any tennis player ever. Won't be easy: On Sunday, Djokovic will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of last year's Wimbledon final; Kate, the Princess of Wales, is set to be there in a rare public appearance after her cancer diagnosis.

Let’s football! A look at India’s inability to play the beautiful game—and what can be done
football across the length and breadth of this well populated, cricket-junkie land were agog discussing the previous night’s two Euro group matches. Jude Bellingham’s 95th minute goal — and England’s lacklustre performance against Slovenia — was discussed threadbare as if it was Gareth Southgate’s waistcoat. Also hogging the Monday tika-chatter was Spain’s impressive win against Georgia, Rodri’s performance especially garnering rave reviews from those who know that the “j” in “La Roja” is pronounced as an “h”. The same day, FC Barcelona stopped all its football academies across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune.

Teaching law in regional languages can improve access to legal system: CJI
Chief Justice of India Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Saturday said law students should be well-versed with regional languages and laws so that people's access to the legal system can be improved. Addressing the third convocation of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the importance of imparting legal education in «easy language», asserting that it is currently a shortcoming in the legal profession. Citing an analysis done by the research department of the Supreme Court on 81 universities and colleges, the CJI said, «It was found that common people experience hurdles in understanding their rights and schemes meant for them as they do not know English.» «This means that in law universities, legal education is imparted English, and many times, students at legal aid centres are not able explain legal procedures to the common people in regional languages,» he said.
