‘Morbi’ effect: Anand Mahindra shares how Indian ‘bahubali’ businesses can compete with China
Anand Mahindra has once again highlighted an inspiring Indian success story, demonstrating how small-town entrepreneurs are emerging as global business powerhouses. In a recent tweet, the Chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra shared a video showcasing Morbi, a town in Gujarat, and its dominance in the ceramic industry. The video details how Morbi, covering just 50 by 9 km, has become a global ceramic hub, producing 90 per cent of India's ceramics. According to the video, nearly 1,000 family-owned factories in Morbi have been manufacturing tiles and ceramics since the 1930s, successfully competing with China's pricing and matching Italy’s quality. The video states that these businesses collectively control 13 per cent of the world's ceramic production, creating an industry worth thousands of crores and employing approximately four lakh people.

US economic worries mount as Trump implements tariffs, cuts workforce, freezes spending
Trump may be doing more to harm the US economy than to fix it. The labour market remains healthy with a 4.1 per cent unemployment rate and 151,000 jobs added in February, and Trump likes to point to investment commitments by Apple and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to show that he's delivering results. But Friday's employment report also found that the number of people stuck working part-time because of economic circumstances jumped by 460,000 last month. In the leisure and hospitality sectors that reflect consumers having extra money to spend, 16,000 jobs were lost. And the federal government reduced its payrolls by 10,000 in a potential harbinger of the alarm being sounded by the stock market, consumer confidence and other measures of where the economy is headed.

India, US trade deal is key to Trump’s economic agenda as well
Donald Trump's push to boost American production and exports, ToI reported. However, across-the-board duty reductions may not necessarily translate into higher US shipments to India, as companies are likely to source goods from more competitive markets like China or Southeast Asia. Despite the tariff debates, American brands such as Harley-Davidson and Tesla do not currently manufacture vehicles in the US for export to India. Harley-Davidson, a brand often associated with US presidents, imports its motorcycles from Thailand, while Tesla—on the verge of entering the Indian market—plans to ship its electric vehicles from Germany after Indian authorities discouraged imports from China. Locational advantages, lower freight costs, and economies of scale make it more profitable for companies to manufacture in other countries rather than the US. Many firms also take advantage of India's free trade agreements to ship goods at zero duty.

Nifty valuations at multi-year lows, can fall further in worst-case scenario: Ventura
Nifty 50’s forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has fallen to multi-year lows, as the ongoing market selloff pushes valuations down sharply. The benchmark index’s P/E for 2025 and 2026 now stands at 18.5x and 16.2x, respectively, marking a significant compression in valuation multiples, brokerage Ventura noted. Historically, Nifty’s forward P/E has seen sharper declines during past market crises, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008 and the COVID 19-induced crash of 2020, when valuations dropped to 10.5x and 15x, respectively. The brokerage warned that if corrective mechanisms are not put in place, the current downturn could mirror past collapses.

Metal tariffs won’t majorly impact Hindalco, Nalco's global operations: Parthiv Jhonsa
«What we have seen in the past is whenever there is a tariff or anything like that, the metal prices usually go up in the near term and that is actually positive for companies like Hindalco,» says Parthiv Jhonsa, Anand Rathi Institutional Equities. I want to first really talk about what is happening in the world. We have been speaking with the managements of Hindalco, Nalco, etc. The managements firmly believe that these tariffs will not really impact them. Do you think that is the same? Parthiv Jhonsa: We need to understand that over especially last two months, the entire metal has seen a lot of to-and-fros internationally. Yes, companies like Hindalco where Novelis has a huge presence in USA, something like these tariffs would actually not make a huge difference or a huge dent to them because they have a good presence in USA.

Markets reversing? Sudip Bandyopadhyay on 5 stocks to consider now
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital, says post correction, some of the larger banks, particularly SBI, is looking very good for somebody willing to build a long-term portfolio, Apart from that, one can look at some of the down-and-out banks which took a hit because of multiple reasons, particularly asset quality issues on the microfinance book. IndusInd Bank is one bank which I will definitely recommend from a little aggressive investors’ point of view. It is a good time to start buying into IndusInd Bank as well. Among pharma companies, one can go for domestic focused pharma companies like Mankind Pharma and pharma companies having significant manufacturing facilities in the US like Piramal Pharma. The other stock Bandyopadhyay likes is a defence PSU. There is a significant opportunity for Bharat Electronics (BEL) to perform and outperform. This correction should be taken as an opportunity to accumulate this stock. Some of the markers seem to be reversing. Crude is on our side and now RBI also is pumping in a whole lot of liquidity in the system. Do you think that is enough to turn around the markets? Sudip Bandyopadhyay: Well, it may not be enough in the long term, but the short-term market is very much excited.

Why Indian automakers are not scared of Elon Musk
Elon Musk's electric car maker Tesla, which has been actively exploring opportunities to enter the Indian market, is opening a showroom in Mumbai’s upscale business district Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to sell its imported cars. Tesla has plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Maharashtra. The most popular electric car brand in the world has long been seen as a heavyweight which will disrupt Indian's nascent electric vehicle (EV) market. But Indian automaker don't seem to be scared of Musk's India venture. JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal has doubted Musk’s ability to crack the Indian market, asserting that local giants Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are now deeply entrenched. JSW Group has a JV with China's SAIC Motor, JSW MG Motor India Pvt. Ltd, which sells EVs such as MG Comet EV, MG ZS EV, MG Windsor EV, MG 4 EV, and MG M9 EV. It is planning to launch several new EV models in 2025, including the Cyberster, an electric sports car. India's EV sales are merely 2.5% of the total passenger vehicle sales. Can Indian EV makers take on the world's biggest EV brand while they are still in their infancy?

India's economic growth pegged at 6.5% for FY26 despite Trump tariff threat: CRISIL
CRISIL. The forecast rests on two key assumptions: the continuation of normal monsoon patterns and soft commodity prices. CRISIL expects that these factors, coupled with cooling food inflation, tax benefits outlined in the Union Budget 2025-2026, and lower borrowing costs, will stimulate discretionary consumption. «India’s resilience is being tested again. Over the past few years, we have built a few safe harbours against exogenous shocks — healthy economic growth, low current account deficit and external public debt, and adequate forex reserves — which provide ample policy latitude. So, while the waters can turn choppy, consumption-led rural and urban demand will be crucial to short-term growth. On the other hand, continuing investments and efficiency gains will aid in the medium term. We foresee both manufacturing and services supporting growth through fiscal 2031,» said Amish Mehta, Managing Director and CEO of CRISIL.
