India's cement consumption has potential to grow 3-fold: Dalmia Bharat
Dalmia Bharat, the country's second-oldest cement manufacturer that began its industrial journey in pre-independent India, is investing significantly to build fresh nationwide capacity to meet surging demand from industries as diverse as housing, public infrastructure, and commercial assets. Puneet Dalmia, MD and CEO, announced a capital expenditure of ₹3,520 crore to take Dalmia Bharat's capacity to 55.5 million tonnes a year, cementing its leadership credentials in the rapidly consolidating home market. «India is one of the fastest growing economies, and it is a large economy. So, it offers the benefit of scale,» Puneet Dalmia told ET. «Average per capita consumption is 280 kg, while the global average is 550 kg. In high growth phases, economies have seen cement consumption grow to 750-800 kg per capita. So, there is potential to go 3x from here.» Dalmia acknowledged that short-term headwinds existed in the form of a price war that was driving down margins of players but believes that doesn't change the long-term view. He attributed the price war to a phenomenon where players were prioritising market share over margins in the backdrop of consolidation in the sector.

Make trade cool again: A well-crafted, flexible US-India trade agreement can unlock lasting economic opportunities
Returning to America, these ships carried prized Indian products: indigo dye and delicate silk. These imports reshaped American manufacturing, influencing textile production, dyeing methods and fashion trends. This historical exchange illustrates a timeless lesson: trade, at its core, fosters innovation and benefits both sides. Today, that spirit of cooperation is under strain. Donald Trump's administration has embraced protectionism, aiming to bring manufacturing jobs back to American shores through a policy called 'Fair and Reciprocal Plan'. Underpinning this policy is frustration over trade imbalances and unequal market access. As the White House recently highlighted, 'The US average applied tariff on agricultural goods is 5%. But India's average applied tariff is 39%. India also charges a 100% tariff on US motorcycles, while we only charge a 2.4% tariff on Indian motorcycles.' Such tariff disparities have soured economic relations, even as the US and India have grown strategically closer.

'India is EU's key ally on climate amid geopolitical turbulence'
Wopke Hoekstra, the European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, feels when it comes to the India-EU partnership, «the sky truly is the limit for the future». This comes at a time when countries are grappling with challenges on multiple fronts-geopolitical headwinds, the need to secure industrial competitiveness while also tackling climate change. Bullish on India's efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy while expanding the country's economic output and bridging development gaps, Hoekstra, who was in Delhi last week, spoke of the potential for increased India-EU cooperation in areas like renewables and batteries, building the clean manufacturing industrial base in India and Europe, and delivering on the promise of carbon markets.

Reciprocal tariffs may make Indian generic drugs costlier in US: Pharma giants on Trump stance
pharmaceutical industry say levying tariffs may make generic drugs marginally costlier for the US patients and even lead to drug shortages. Dilip Shanghvi, chairman and managing director at Sun Pharma, India's largest drug maker by sales and market cap, told an industry gathering that his company sells products between $1 and $5 per bottle in the US and a tariff of 10% or 25% may marginally change that cost. «Possibly it will not justify relocating manufacturing,» Shanghvi said, responding to Trump's frenetic calls to either set up manufacturing bases in the US or face tariffs. He added the profit margins for drugs sold in the US are so low that the ability to absorb tariffs is limited. «Ultimately it will get passed on to the consumers,» he noted. For FY24, Sun Pharma had 32% of its total sales of ₹47,800 crore from the US, a notch higher than 31% that came from its home market India.
