Auto players line up array of new EV models in coming years on govt push to green mobility
Indian auto industry is gearing up to roll out an array of electric vehicle models over the next few years amid a renewed push by the government to encourage environment-friendly mobility solutions with the unveiling of a new policy. Mass market players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors are lining up new models to cater to the demand across segments. Mahindra & Mahindra CEO Automotive Sector Nalinikanth Gollagunta told PTI that starting January 2025, the company will be rolling out five new battery electric vehicles in the coming years. «These electric SUVs will be built on Mahindra's innovative INGLO platform and aim to cater to a variety of consumers through their diverse range. Dixon’s largest order book is in mobiles; IT hardware can be a $1 billion opportunity in next 2-3 years: Saurabh Gupta
Saurabh Gupta, Group CFO, Dixon Technologies, says “there’s a $10 billion opportunity in IT hardware for India. $10 billion worth of IT hardware products are imported into India. So, it is a large opportunity for import substitution and if India is able to do a good job as an industry, if you are able to generate that operating leverage and cost competitiveness, in a few years, yes, it can potentially get exported from India as well.” Gupta also is confident that achieving a growth rate of 35-40% annually should not be a challenge over next few years. On EMS, India’s position & Dixon’s share Saurabh Gupta: If you look at the whole electronic manufacturing space, India's share in the global electronic space is just 2%. But if you look at the whole government policy framework, as far as the labour pool availability and labour cost in India is concerned, we are looking at a very significant growth potential in this particular sector. The reason is increasingly, brands want to outsource more and more manufacturing and not only manufacturing, they want to deepen the level of manufacturing and in our sense, it will be more design-led manufacturing for us and also, the government policy framework has been very supportive.

Telecom firms struggle to monetise amid incomplete 5G rollout
Telecom companies, which haven’t been able to offer a full 5G experience to customers, are failing to monetise it. Curiously, this seems to be the fate of the odd ones—1G, 3G and 5G. India recently became the fastest 5G rollout nation in the world. The country’s top two carriers, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have collectively splurged around $25 billion in buying 5G airwaves and launching their next-generation wireless broadband services. Between them, they have 165 million 5G customers. But neither of them has seen any serious monetisation of their 5G businesses even 18 months after they introduced next-gen networks. Telecom companies attribute the challenge in monetisation to the continuing absence of compelling 5G use cases and applications for both retail and enterprise users and a yet-tomature devices ecosystem.
