Switzerland scraps MFN clause in tax treaty with India
Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with India effective January 1, 2025, in a move that may raise the tax outgo on dividend income for Indian entities operating in the European country. The decision follows India’s Supreme Court ruling in October 2023 in a case involving Swiss multinational Nestle SA. The court had held that the MFN clause under the DTAA does not get automatically triggered until notified under the Income Tax Act, 1961. “On the basis of the Indian Supreme Court ruling, the Swiss competent authority acknowledges that its interpretation of para 5 of the Protocol to the IN-CH DTA is not shared by the Indian side,” said a recent statement issued by the Swiss authorities. “In the absence of reciprocity, it therefore waives its unilateral application with effect from 1 January 2025.”

Hemang Jani on 3 healthcare stocks to consider buying now
Hemang Jani, Independent Market Expert, says most of the healthcare companies have been doing a fairly decent job and some of these companies are in an expansion phase. Max Healthcare is looking to expand in a big way, and that is true for Narayana Hrudalaya also. For the investors looking for a steady 15-18% kind of a CAGR growth, having some exposure to names like Apollo Hospitals, Max, or Narayana Hrudalya would make sense. How have you assessed the quarterly numbers from the entire FMCG basket? Do you think that the slowdown is worrying and it is going to continue into the coming quarters? Or was it a bit of a one-off? Hemang Jani: Consumer companies, particularly the staple and FMCG companies are going through a great amount of slowdown and when you look at the quarterly numbers by and large things were not that positive. The only thing is that the market reaction to some of those numbers was a bit of a surprise because it is not as if HUL or Nestle will report a very high single digit kind of volume growth.

Sustainability and technology is the future of supply chain: ProcMart’s Anish Popli
ProcMart, an online B2B e-commerce marketplace, is expanding into biofuels and sustainable packaging. Anish Popli, Founder and CEO of ProcMart, said that 90% of the company’s clients are Fortune 500 companies. “These clients put a lot of weightage on sustainability. Their procurement managers come to us looking for a sustainable supply chain. After discussions with them, we have realised we can help these large organisations in biofuels and packaging,” he said. Sustainable packaging is one way to reduce carbon emissions, and ProcMart can contribute to this as it is also into packing and shipping items. ProcMart, being a marketplace for commodities, has added biofuel in its products. It has started procuring biofuels for clients. Popli says more clients are asking for biofuels.

FMCG, auto companies step up ad spends to revive demand
Nestle, Colgate-Palmolive, Godrej Consumer Products, Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, Skoda and Tata Motors, have stepped up advertising and marketing spends in September quarter, and some of them said they will continue to increase spending through the December quarter to help revive demand. Toothpaste maker Colgate increased marketing and ad spending by 17.8% in the July-September period to ₹242 crore and expects the momentum to continue, while Godrej Consumer Products said in a post-earnings call that it will continue to incrementally increase ad spends as it did in the past quarter. Colgate in a management commentary said a step up in ad spends, which were nearly a percentage point higher from a year earlier, were on account of innovation in the quarter. Nestle India increased advertising and marketing investments in the September quarter. «We kept a relentless focus on investing behind our core brands, with advertising and marketing investments increasing this quarter,» Nestle India chairman Suresh Narayanan said in an earnings statement. Addressing reporters at Nestle's Samalakha factory last week, Narayanan said the company is «taking steps to address pockets of weakness and mitigate local competition with higher ad spends».
