Security Council 'perhaps fatally' undermined by Gaza, Ukraine deadlock, says UN chief
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Monday deplored how the U.N. Security Council had failed to respond adequately to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, saying the conflicts had «perhaps fatally» undermined its authority. Speaking at the opening of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres said the U.N. Security Council often found itself deadlocked and «unable to act on the most significant peace and security issues of our time». «The Council's lack of unity on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and on Israel's military operations in Gaza following the horrific terror attacks by Hamas on 7 October, has severely — perhaps fatally — undermined its authority,» he said.

Labour Party wants to see UK-India cooperation deepen: UK's shadow deputy PM Angela Rayner
Angela Rayner has said. Rayner, the deputy leader of the opposition in the UK and a senior leader of the Labour Party, said she wants the UK and India to build on history, and see the trade agreement go forward. In an interview with PTI on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue in Delhi, Rayner said, «I first visited (India) in 2007 and to see the transformation that has happened and to see India on course to be the third largest economy, it just shows how amazing India has done and the progress that has been made.» «Part of that is about the policies that the government has introduced around recognising women's role and not just in terms of women's role in society but how crucial it is for the economy. If you want to grow in economy, then having women in empowerment is crucial to that,» she said.

How can ruling party seek permission for protest amid sec 144 prohibition, Delhi HC asks AAP
Delhi High Court asked the AAP on Friday how a «ruling» political party could seek permission to hold a protest in the national capital when there was a prohibitory order in force against gatherings in view of ongoing farmers' protests. Justice Subramonium Prasad, while hearing the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) petition challenging the police's refusal to allow it to hold a «peaceful protest» of 800 people at Jantar Mantar on February 25 in relation to allegedly inflated water bills, said if the permission is granted to the party, a floodgate of other such applications will open. «When P2 (an order under section 144 of the CrPC) is there, how can a ruling party come (for permission)? P2 is there and you, as the government or as a party which is the government, (permission) cannot be granted,» the judge said.

BJP trying to aggravate Sandeshkhali situation, not allowing peace to return: TMC
Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday blamed the BJP for trying to aggravate the situation in restive Sandeshkhali by foiling every effort to restore peace and normalcy in the area even as the administration and police are working overtime to reach out to every villager to address their grievances. Addressing a press conference here, senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said the administration has full control over the situation and is diligently addressing every complaint and grievance of villagers. «The administration is in charge, with BDO and police officers working tirelessly. Every complaint is being thoroughly examined and promptly addressed. However, whenever there is a semblance of normalcy being restored, BJP leaders such as Sukanta Majumdar and Locket Chatterjee rush in to exacerbate the situation. The BJP shows no concern for the women of Sandeshkhali; their only agenda seems to be to sow chaos for electoral gains,» she said. Bhattacharya and another senior minister, Shashi Panja, both strongly reacted when a reporter compared the situation in Sandeshkhali to that of Singur and Nandigram during the erstwhile CPI(M) regime in 2007-08.
