Sreela Majumdar passed away, after a long, hard battle with cancer. She was 65. Mourning her demise, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal took to Twitter on Saturday and paid a tribute. Describing her as a “powerful actress,” the minister reminisced briefly about her career and ended the note by extending condolences to her family. “Saddened by the news of the demise of film actress Sreela Majumdar today afternoon. Sreela was a noted and powerful actress who played outstanding roles in several significant Indian films. It is a big loss for the Bengal film industry and we shall miss her stellar presence. My condolences to her family, “ reads the post. Several colleagues also mourned her passing. In an interview with PTI, actress Rituparna Sengupta lamented that despite being a powerhouse of talent, Majumdar was under-utilised. “She had delivered so many memorable performances under the direction of filmmakers like Mrinal Sen and others. She could have been utilised more by the industry,” told the ‘Dahan’ actress. In an interview withAnandabazar Patrika, director Kaushik Gangopadhyay recalled how the actress never skipped shooting and used to be regular even when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Majumdar has left a husband and a son behind.
