Nikhil Nigania of AB Bernstein is gung-ho on the power sector. Here’s why
Nikhil Nigania, Director, AB Bernstein, says “we are still in the early stages of a multi-year cycle in the power sector. We think some of these demand supply challenges will continue for some time. The receivables should stay good. And the renewable commitment has been to triple the capacity by 2030. It is still early in the cycle. It looks like good times are ahead for the sector.” Give us the big picture. Why is power along with its ancillaries so hot in the market? What has happened in the power sector is that we had a decade of poor performance for the sector. Now suddenly two things are happening. One, we are in a tight power demand supply situation. Hence, we are seeing deficits in power. And second, at the same time, we are trying to do energy transitions as well. And maybe to a third point to add to that, is that receivables for the power sector companies have also improved.

Govt allows IT SEZs floor-wise denotification, move likely to help reduce vacancy levels
SEZ Rules, 2006. As per the Special Economic Zones (Fifth amendment) Rules, 2023, the Board of Approval, on request of a developer of an information technology (IT) or IT-enabled services SEZs, may permit demarcation of part of the built-up area of the SEZ as non-processing area. This non-processing area can be utilised to set up operations of businesses engaged in the IT and ITeS. However, the non-processing area will consist of a complete floor and part of a floor will not be allowed to be demarcated, said a memorandum issued by the Department of Commerce late Wednesday. Board of Approval will allow demarcation only after repayment, without interest, of tax benefits attributable to the non-processing area, social and commercial infrastructure created to be used by both processing and the proposed demarcated area. The move is expected to allow developers to lease the non-processing area to IT companies not involved in export activity and reduce the vacancy levels at their office complexes. “Most of these IT SEZs are at prime locations and these complexes will achieve full leasing once the new changes kick in.

Marico boss Harsh Mariwala blown away by Vicky Kaushal’s ‘spectacular’ performance, 'Sam Bahadur' crosses Rs 35 cr in 6 days
Sam Bahadur’ has made quite an impact both at the box-office as well as on the audience, despite facing stiff competition from the Goliath, the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Animal’. On December 7, Harsh Mariwala, the founder and Chairman of Marico, took to X (formerly Twitter) and heaped praises on the Vicky Kaushal-starrer. The business tycoon gushed about Kaushal’s tour-de-force performance as Sam Manekshaw, India’s first Field Marshal, and called it “nothing short of spectacular.” He also lauded director Meghna Gulzar for celebrating the contributions and life of a “strategic genius”, who till recently was often ignored by the annals of Indian history. “The film brilliantly captures key historical events involving Bangladesh, Pakistan, and China, offering a window into important chapters of the past. Vicky Kaushal's portrayal of Sam Manekshaw is nothing short of spectacular, bringing to life the charisma and courage of this celebrated military leader. Meghna Gulzar and her team have done a commendable job in highlighting the contributions of a strategic genius whose story, despite its significance, might have remained largely uncelebrated,” reads his tweet.

Very comfortable with infrastructure, cement, steel and a little pharma: Pashupati Advani
Pashupati Advani, Founder, Global Foray, says “the question is whether our IT is able to actually pivot and take advantage of that. I think in some cases, they will take some advantage which is why it is not going to fall off a cliff. But I think that the business models are becoming more difficult and a lot of jobs are going back to the countries where the work is getting done just as a way of protectionism which seems to be happening all over the world. ” How do you see this MPC meet? Do you expect it to be a big event? What are your expectations from the MPC meeting? The world wants to keep rates where they are and start pulling them down. We do not have an indication of that yet. But I think this MPC meeting will just basically say nothing. I think they are not really going to change rates this time, that is my humble assumption.

India’s state-run firms seen extending dream rally on Modi bets
Modi’s expected re-election next year is seen supporting capital expenditure, further boosting their allure. Modi’s government is spending billions of dollars on everything from roads and railways to defense, renewing interest in a sector that has for long been a straggler of India’s $4 trillion stock market. The S&P BSE PSU Index, a gauge that includes some of the nation’s largest power utilities, miners, oil refiners and engineering firms, has surged 44% thus far in 2023. That’s beaten the 14.5% advance in the S&P BSE Sensex Index by the most in two decades, data compiled by Bloomberg show. IMAGE “There is still room for further gains” as valuations are still low compared to non-state players, said Anita Gandhi, strategist at Arihant Capital Markets Ltd.
