Elon Musk running the US government? Here's why Democrats are referring to Tesla CEO as 'President'
Elon Musk running the US government? Tesla CEO's growing influence on the Republican Party and the Trump administration has become a topic of discussion among Democrats, some of whom now sarcastically refer to the SpaceX CEO as “President Musk.” As the threat of US government shutdown looms, Musk, one of the closest allies and a big supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, interjected himself into the process. The moniker 'President Musk' started trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, after the spending fight on Capitol Hill took an unexpected turn as the billionaire entrepreneur played a pivotal role in derailing a bipartisan funding bill, raising questions about his growing influence in Washington. Musk’s barrage of posts on X calling for lawmakers to «kill the bill» has led many to wonder whether he, not Donald Trump, is setting the Republican agenda. US attorney behind Adani's bribery charges, Breon Peace, to resign as Trump returns
Breon Peace said he will step down Jan. 10, ending a stint as federal prosecutor that included high-profile cases such as singer R Kelly’s trial for sex-trafficking, a fraud indictment of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and the criminal conviction of a US Congressman. Peace, a 53-year-old native of Brooklyn, New York, said in a statement Wednesday “it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as United States Attorney.” He’ll be replaced as head of the Brooklyn office, known as the Eastern District of New York, by First Assistant US Attorney Carolyn Pokorny, according to the statement. He was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2021 and will leave before President-elect Donald Trump takes office Jan. 20.

EMs brace for challenges amid strong dollar and elevated US bond yields: Geoff Dennis
«For the first time Chair Powell kind of tipped his hat to that saying we just do not know what is going to go on. So, in this environment with not much in the way of rate cuts, I thought there will only be two actually in the new dot plot. I thought they would be a bit more hawkish. I am surprised the market was so surprised but there you go,» says Geoff Dennis, Independent Emerging Markets Commentator. What should one be prepared for in the year 2025 because given the fact that you had the Federal Reserve go ahead and lowered their dot plot when you talk about the rate cuts come next year. You saw the markets spook. How should one read into all of these signs because yesterday when you saw the US GDP growth as well, they revised it upwards? Geoff Dennis: It is a difficult environment for emerging markets let me start by saying that and it is summed up by the fact that the Fed is now assumed anyway in terms of the dot plot that the midpoint is two interest rate cuts.

South Korean investigators seek to question reluctant president over martial law
Yoon Suk Yeol over his December 3 declaration of martial law, summoning him for questioning on Christmas Day despite his repeated refusal to cooperate. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, which is leading a joint investigation with police and military authorities into the ill-conceived power grab that lasted only a few hours, said it plans to question Yoon on charges of abuse of authority and orchestrating a rebellion. Yoon, whose presidential powers have been suspended since the opposition-controlled National Assembly impeached him on December 14, has dodged several requests by the joint investigation team and public prosecutors while also blocking searches of his office. It's not clear what investigators can do if Yoon continues to reject their demands. Under the country's laws, locations potentially linked to military secrets cannot be seized or searched without the consent of the person in charge, and it's unlikely that Yoon will voluntarily leave his residence if he faces of being compelled to appear.

India’s GCCs soar to 1,700, set to hit 2,200 by 2029: New Nasscom president
“As per our estimates, the 1,700 centres in total have grown in size by 25%, meaning they are individually expanding while new ones are also being added. That is why you’re seeing so much activity and hiring,” said Nambiar. Formerly the CMD of Cognizant India, he took over as Nasscom’s president in November. Nambiar emphasised that the growth of GCCs doesn’t signify a loss for the IT sector. Instead, both sectors are closely intertwined, creating a win-win situation for India. To further accelerate the growth of the sector—which has hired more people than IT services firms—Nasscom is working with various government arms to address key concerns facing GCCs, such as safe harbor provisions and advance pricing agreements. He added that the era of requesting tax incentives or sops is over; the focus now is on resolving these structural concerns.

Fed matches rate cut expectations but 'hawkish' outlook sends dollar soaring
The vote was almost unanimous, with 11 of the 12 Federal Open Market Committee members voting in favour of the rate trim; only Beth Hammack, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland cast her vote in favour of maintaining current interest rates. However, cautious rhetoric from Fed chair Jerome Powell caused Treasuries to topple and the US dollar to soar. «As for additional cuts, we are going to be looking for further progress on inflation as well as continued strength in the labour market,» said Powell, emphasising that the FOMC will remain data-driven into 2025. 'At least 100k beds...': Trump's border czar spills bean on mass deportations of illegal immigrants, gives cost
mass deportations of undocumented immigrants immediately after Trump is sworn in as president. In a CNN interview, Homan said Wednesday night that plans are underway to deport undocumented immigrants at large scale and that he’ll need funding from Congress to do so. Tom Homan said he will need a minimum of 100,000 beds to detain undocumented immigrants – more than doubling the 40,000 detention beds ICE is currently funded for – and needs more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to carry out the president-elect’s mass deportation plans. Rahul Gandhi came close... started shouting, alleges BJP Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak on Thursday criticised Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, stating, «He came close… I did not like it and he started shouting. Whatever happened today is very sad, this should not happen. We did not like the way they threatened… I have also complained to the Chairman.» A face-off between the opposition and NDA MPs in Parliament premises over the alleged insult to B R Ambedkar left former minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi injured earlier today. The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing the senior member, a charge rejected by the Congress leader. Trouble began when the INDIA bloc members insisted on entering Parliament through the BJP MPs holding a protest instead of using the space left empty on one side of the staircase of the Makar Dwar, used by members to enter and exit the building.
