Rail budget no record breaking but failed budget; opposition slams Rail ministry in Lok Sabha
failed budget". She said the present government was creating a narrative that every development started after 2014. But the «devil lies in details» and available facts show that the financial health of the public carrier was in a bad shape and it was on «ventilator». She alleged that revenues were falling and making (Instagram) reels will not help in any way. According to her, the Railways was the only one in the race and it still stands at the runners up position and not the top. She wondered whether the Railways like all profit making public entities would also land up with the «friends» (mitra) of the ruling dispensation. Gaikwad alleged that the rail kavach developed to prevent accidents was being used by the minister to protect himself and not passengers and the trains. She said he continues in office despite a series of accidents under his watch.

Bengaluru park forbids jogging, asks people to 'walk clockwise': Netizens ask, 'Will they ban Western clothes next?'
Accompanying her post with an image on X (previously known as Twitter), she shared a snapshot of a signboard listing various park guidelines, which included instructions like “No Jogging,” “Walk in a Clockwise Manner,” and “No Recreational Games.” Sahana, the concerned citizen, raised questions about these directives, particularly focusing on the ban on jogging in a place meant for exercise and outdoor activities. In her online post, she expressed shock at the restriction, challenging the logic behind preventing individuals from jogging in the park. She also employed sarcasm to make her point, suggesting that, at this rate, the next rule might involve outlawing Western attire in public parks.

EC to talk Aadhaar seeding for voter IDs with top officials on Tuesday
This comes amid a heightened political debate, particularly after the Trinamool Congress raised concerns about duplicate EPIC entries in West Bengal. The EC has already announced plans to eliminate duplicate voter entries within three months. However, the move to link Aadhaar with EPIC is a significant and likely contentious step forward. Currently, the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, allows electoral officers to request voters' Aadhaar numbers, but it remains voluntary and is complicated by legal and privacy concerns. The EC has successfully entered a significant number of Aadhaar numbers into its database voluntarily but has been unable to fully integrate the two systems due to privacy concerns. Despite this, the EC has consistently advocated for Aadhaar seeding as a tool to prevent duplication in the electoral roll. In 2017, the EC even filed an application in the Supreme Court to continue linking Aadhaar with voter IDs, emphasizing its role in ensuring a clean and accurate electoral roll.

India, China outperform global trade in 2024, trade resilience stressed in 2025: UNCTAD
global trade averages in 2024, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in its Global Trade Update Friday. It said that trends like the widening deficits of the US and EU with China along with India’s rising deficit with Russia amid shifting energy trade could prompt new tariffs, restrictions, or investment shifts, adding to economic uncertainty. However, it cautioned that trade resilience is under pressure in 2025 and as trade uncertainty grows, global cooperation and balanced policies will be key to preventing economic fragmentation and safeguarding long-term growth. Noting that protectionism and shifting trade strategies could disrupt global trade and services trade remains strong but goods trade faces uncertainty, UNCTAD urged balanced policies and multilateral cooperation. Governments are expanding tariffs, subsidies, and industrial policies, reshaping trade flows.

Taiwan's leader says tougher measures needed to counter stepped-up Chinese infiltration, spying
William Lai Ching-te said Thursday tougher measures are needed to counter stepped-up Chinese infiltration, spying and other efforts to weaken the island's defences. Lai cited a range of recent incidents involving China that fall into a «gray area» of psychological warfare short of open armed conflict. Beijing's efforts to «subvert, obtain secrets, lure members of the armed forces and influence public opinion to lose confidence in our national defence require that we step up our legal safeguards to prevent and detect such incidents,» Lai said at a news conference. Lai's Democratic Progressive Party favours the island's continued de-facto independence from Beijing. China has refused almost all official contact with the DPP since Lai's predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, was elected eight years ago. China regularly sends ships and planes into airspace and waters near the island in an effort to intimidate its 23 million people and wear down its armed forces and morale. Taiwan's government recently expelled the Chinese wife of a Taiwanese citizen after the woman repeatedly posted short clips on Chinese social media saying China would conquer Taiwan in half an hour and praising the Chinese leadership.

Kidney-damaging jaggery? How this 'healthy' sweetener could be slowly harming your internal organs
Jaggery and honey are often considered healthier alternatives to white sugar. Jaggery, a natural sweetener rich in iron, minerals, and antioxidants, is known to boost immunity, aid digestion, and detoxify the liver. It also helps prevent anaemia and provides a steady energy release without causing sudden sugar spikes. Regular consumption of jaggery is believed to improve haemoglobin levels and naturally cleanse the liver. However, recent reports suggest that adulterated jaggery sold in markets could pose serious health risks.

'Laat Saheb' Holi procession here have been covered with tarpaulins and a strict security measure has been put in place ahead of the festival of colours which coincides with the Friday prayers. Following an 18th-century tradition, Holi in Shahjahanpur begins with revellers hurling footwear at a man impersonating 'Laat Saheb' — a British Lord — seated on a bullock cart. Barricades have been installed along the procession route and several CCTV cameras have been installed by the local administration. «There are 18 Holi processions in the city, including the two major 'Laat Saheb' processions. To ensure security, the larger procession has been divided into three zones and eight sectors, with around 100 magistrates deployed,» Superintendent of Police Rajesh S told PTI. Moreover, police have taken preventive action against 2,423 people to deter potential troublemakers, he said. «The security deployment includes 10 police circle officers, 250 sub-inspectors, around 1,500 police personnel and two companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC),» the SP added.
