Adani Power, Jindal Group companies, Vedanta in race for IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power
Adani Power, Jindal Power and Vedanta Ltd are among a dozen companies that have expressed interest in acquiring IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Corporation (ITPCL), one of the biggest assets under the IL&FS portfolio with debt of nearly Rs 10,000 crore. IL&FS, as part of its resolution process, had recently invited expressions of interest (EoIs) to acquire a 92% stake in ITPCL held by IL&FS Energy Development Company (80%) and the group holding company (12%). This asset has two coal-based power plants with 1,200 MW capacity in Cuddalore with the potential to add nearly 2,000 MW more, a captive jetty adjacent to the plant, and a captive coal mine in Indonesia. Adani Power and Jindal Power are also competing against each other for Lanco Amarkantak, which has two units of 300 MW operational and two units of 600 MW under construction. Vedanta Ltd had last year acquired a 1,000 MW coal-based thermal power plant for ?1,440 crore under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). Spokespersons of Adani, Vedanta and Jindal Power did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other bidders for ITPCL include some non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), alternative investment funds (AIFs) and power companies. An IL&FS spokesperson said assessment of bidder eligibility is in progress.

Face reality, respect result: Taiwan to China
Taiwan told China on Sunday to «face reality» and respect its election result, after voters defied Beijing's warnings and chose pro-sovereignty candidate Lai Ching-te as its President. Voters spurned Beijing's repeated calls not to vote for Lai, delivering a comfortable victory for a man China's ruling Communist Party sees as a dangerous separatist. Beijing responded to Lai's victory by saying it would not change the «inevitable trend of China's reunification».

Taiwan election a relief for world markets, concern for local investors
Vice President Lai Ching-te won the presidency on Saturday, the third consecutive term for his ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but the party lost its parliamentary majority, complicating Lai's spending plans and any intent to take an aggressive stance on China. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, had called Lai a separatist and «troublemaker through and through», but took a gentler tone after the election, not mentioning him by name and saying the results revealed the DPP «cannot represent the mainstream public opinion» on Taiwan. Analysts expect Taiwan's stock market to take a hit this week as the spectre of policy paralysis fuels selling in a market that is up 25% in little more than a year. Yet the outcome is also a relief for investors who had feared the hawkish Lai would push for Taiwan's formal independence, something he has denied. Investors have worried about a hostile reaction from China and a chain reaction of sanctions that could cripple the global semiconductor industry. «I would imagine the reaction is negative.

This followed notable progress that was announced in the January Bulletin. For the fifth month in a row, USCIS will use the Dates for Filing to ascertain the eligibility of employment-based filings in February. Considering that the Final Action Dates chart typically contains more progressive cutoff dates than the Dates for Filing chart, this is great news. The Visa Bulletin provides important information about the processing of adjustment of status applications for consular immigrant visa files and approvals, as well as the per-country priority date cutoffs that control immigrant visa availability.
