South Korea, China, Japan agree to promote regional trade as Trump tariffs loom
The countries' three trade ministers agreed to «closely cooperate for a comprehensive and high-level» talks on a South Korea-Japan-China free trade agreement deal to promote «regional and global trade», according to a statement released after the meeting. «It is necessary to strengthen the implementation of RCEP, in which all three countries have participated, and to create a framework for expanding trade cooperation among the three countries through Korea-China-Japan FTA negotiations,» said South Korean Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun, referring to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. The ministers met ahead of Trump's announcement on Wednesday of more tariffs in what he calls «liberation day», as he upends Washington's trading partnerships. Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo are major U.S. major trading partners, although they have been at loggerheads among themselves over issues including territorial disputes and Japan's release of wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Govt to impose strict penalties on sugar mills violating stock holding limits
Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry said on Friday. The ministry prescribes monthly stock holding limits for white/refined sugar to prevent hoarding and control price increases. For April, the stock holding limit is set at 23.5 lakh tonnes. In a directive issued to mills, the ministry said it has found repeated violations by some group and individual sugar mills despite previous warnings, prompting the issuance of new, stricter guidelines. Key penalties include: for first-time violations, 100 per cent of excess sugar sold will be deducted from the subsequent month's release quota. Subsequent violations will see progressively higher deductions: 115 per cent for the second, 130 per cent for the third, and 150 per cent for the fourth violation. Mills dispatching less than 90 per cent of quota without intimation will have restricted future allocations.

Did you know? Aamir Khan was once rejected by Kiran Rao... for being Aamir Khan!
Aamir Khan has frequently spoken about how his former wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, turned him down for a role in his own production, Laapataa Ladies. The actor had even auditioned for the part of Sub-Inspector Shyam Manohar, but Kiran ultimately decided that Ravi Kishan was a better fit. Recently, a clip from Aamir’s audition made its way onto social media, igniting a debate among viewers. The footage, which Aamir uploaded on his newly launched YouTube channel, shows him dressed as a village policeman, chewing betel leaf while delivering his lines in a regional accent. In the film, this humorous character undergoes significant development as the story progresses. Many fans supported Kiran’s decision, applauding Aamir for recognizing that the role suited Ravi Kishan better and stepping aside. One viewer remarked, “Ram Gopal Varma once said, ‘Casting the right actor is half the battle won.’ Watching this, I completely agree. Say what you will about Aamir, but at least he has the self-awareness that others, like Salman Khan, lack.” Another user echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Nope… rejecting him was the right choice, both by Kiran and himself. Ravi Kishan fit the role perfectly. If Aamir really wanted to play the character, he should have done extensive preparation and worked with a dialect coach. But let’s be honest, he looks too polished to convincingly portray a rural cop. Ravi Kishan, on the other hand, comes across as authentic.”

GIFT Nifty came home nearly two years ago, but it still has a long way to go
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. India’s ambitious push to bring home trading in Nifty 50 derivatives has made limited progress in nearly two years, as many traders tempted by cost and logistical advantages keep faith in the Singapore Exchange (SGX). While the share of GIFT Nifty volumes originating from within GIFT City has nearly doubled to 33% during the period, it is still a long way from realizing the goal of attracting the majority of these trades to India.

India awaits clarity on Trump's tariffs; officials say New Delhi will react after US makes announcement
Donald Trump has indicated that there will not be too many exceptions to his reciprocal tariff announcement on April 2. «We don't know what will happen. There is a bit of uncertainty around that. Whether tariffs will be announced or imposed on us, we will see what comes and adequately react,» said an official. Another official said the Indian industry is worried about the US' plan and wants early conclusion of the bilateral trade agreement. «Industry is paranoid. Lot of jobs are at stake. It is demanding to do it (BTA) as fast as possible otherwise they will suffer from the US reciprocal tariffs,» the official said, adding that the industry wants to avert or delay tariffs. In the scenario the tariffs are imposed as threatened, industry wants protection from the impact and has written to the government regarding the same, according to the official.

Women’s participation in tech contractual roles nearly triples, but pay gap persists
While hiring policies and diversity initiatives have led to higher female participation, career progression for women remains sluggish, particularly at senior levels, found the report, Gender Parity—Shaping Workforce Equity, that analyses workforce trends across global capability centres (GCCs), IT services, and tech roles in non-tech industries. “While we celebrate the growing presence of women in tech contractual roles, we must recognise that achieving true gender parity requires sustained efforts and a multifaceted approach that transcends hiring more women,” said Neeti Sharma, chief executive of TeamLease Digital.

'Musk’s Starlink satellite internet costs 53% more over 30 years, maintenance twice as expensive'
subsidy program that will benefit satellite internet providers like Elon Musk’s Starlink, but some state and federal officials worry the technology isn’t robust enough to connect Americans on a mass scale and at affordable rates. The Biden administration’s vision for the Broadband Equity and Access Deployment Program (BEAD), designed to deliver fast, reliable home internet service to every US household, leaned heavily on fiber-optic lines, a technology that’s expensive to install but can last for decades. The shift toward satellites is a result of extensive lobbying by Musk and has gained Republican support, including from Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz. State and former federal officials, several of whom spoke to Bloomberg on the condition of anonymity, described pitfalls with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s new approach, which gives more opportunities for satellite terminals that are initially inexpensive, but can cost more over time. One state official shared internal data that showed satellite service costs consumers 53% more over the course of 30 years. Satellite service would also cost more than twice as much to maintain over that time frame, according the data.
