Netflix's Reed Hastings gives $50 million to Bowdoin for AI program
Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings wants more researchers and students to ask deep questions about artificial intelligence and its potential to upend human norms. To that end, Hastings has donated $50 million to Bowdoin College, his alma mater, to create a research initiative on «AI and Humanity» — the largest gift to the liberal arts college in Maine since its founding in 1794, the school announced Monday. The aim of the program, Hastings and school officials said, is to make Bowdoin a mecca for studying the risks and consequences of AI. The initiative also aims to help prepare students to grapple with emerging technologies that can manufacture humanlike texts and even produce formulas for potential new drug compounds.

Tamil Nadu gets major chunk of projects under PLI scheme in Electronics, Automobile: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
electronics and automobile sectors, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. Addressing an event organised by Chennai Citizens' forum on Saturday evening, Sitharaman dismissed charges of the state government that the Centre has neglected Tamil Nadu in terms of funding. She said major 'big ticket' projects have been announced and are progressing at various stages of implementation across the State. «Tamil Nadu has been the largest beneficiary under the PLI- scheme in electronics, electronic parts and automobiles. Out of the 27 companies that have received approval from the Centre, 7 are based out of Tamil Nadu,» the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs noted. Sitharaman highlighted that 25 per cent of the companies availing benefits from the PLI scheme are from the state, she said drawing applause from the audience at the M O P Vaishnav College in the city. Without naming the government or any individual, she rejected claims that the state received minimal revenue from central taxes. «These people arrive at a calculation that the Centre was giving a minimal amount of revenue from the central taxes. I really do not know how they pose such an argument. All I have to say is that the State has been a beneficiary in various central schemes and sector specific initiatives in the last 10 years.» She also pointed out that Tamil Nadu hosts one of the country's two major electronic parts manufacturing clusters, alongside Gujarat. An allocation of Rs 1,100 crore has been made for setting up the cluster in Tamil Nadu.

The greatest missed investment in Shark Tank's history: Would you have made the offer?
Shark Tank, where fortunes are made and dreams are crushed in mere minutes, one missed opportunity still haunts the show's history. It was a moment of rejection that later turned into a billion-dollar regret. Back in 2013, a passionate entrepreneur walked into the Shark Tank, seeking funding for his innovative startup. His pitch lasted just nine minutes, and when he walked away empty-handed, it seemed like another routine dismissal. But what the Sharks didn’t realize at that moment was that they had just let go of a company that would soon become a household name—one that Amazon would later acquire for a staggering $1 billion.

Hindalco eyes 40% of its earnings from downstream ops in 4 years: Satish Pai
Hindalco's downstream operations are likely to bring in as much as 30-40% of the company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in three-four years, its chief executive told ET. These operations — copper, downstream aluminium and speciality alumina — currently account for about 10% of the company's Ebitda, Satish Pai said. Once this mix changes, Hindalco's downstream businesses are likely to have an enterprise value of 8-9 times their Ebitda, while the upstream business may continue to be valued at six times. «In India, the downstream players are valued much higher. So that is where the whole game is,» Pai said. Capital-intensive sectors such as metals are generally valued using the EV/Ebitda valuation. Hindalco, a $26 billion company and the world's largest producer of aluminium by revenue, on Thursday unveiled a new brand identity, terming itself an engineered solutions provider instead of a materials supplier. «Hindalco's new identity reflects our role as a catalyst for change, a problem solver, and a co-creator of new solutions that power progress across industries,» chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said at the launch.

India submits bid to host 2030 CWG: Sports ministry source
sports ministry source told PTI on Thursday, confirming a move that has been in the making for several weeks. The last date to submit the 'Expression of Interest' to host the Games is March 31 and India's letter was sent by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) a few days ago. «Yes, it is true, India's bid has been submitted by the IOA and the state of Gujarat,» the ministry source stated. Ahmedabad, the city that has been finalised to organise the 2030 CWG should the event come to India, is also the front-runner to be the Olympic host if the 2036 bid is successful. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which has re-branded itself as Commonwealth Sport will now lead evaluation process and the final appointment of the host will be decided by the CGF General Assembly. The decision to submit the bid comes after sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently asserted that the country was interested in hosting the Games.

USA's iconic Amtrak rail service to be privatized? Elon Musk suggests so, CEO steps down; here's what Donald Trump could do next
Trump administration. Reflecting on his 16-year journey from intern to CEO, Gardner emphasized his decision was driven by ensuring Amtrak’s alignment with the current administration’s priorities. His departure coincides with Elon Musk’s renewed push to privatize public services like Amtrak and the U.S. Postal Service. Musk, speaking at a March 5 conference, argued privatization could boost efficiency, claiming, “If it can reasonably be privatized, it should be.” Critics, however, point to failures like the U.K.’s recent rail renationalization after decades of private struggles.
