What happens to your property if you die without a will?
A will is a document or declaration that ensures your real estate and other assets are legally transferred and distributed among your heirs according to your wishes after you pass away. As the name suggests, a will means you make it clear to your heirs about who receives what from your estate once you are gone. By writing a will, you can prevent family conflicts and legal battles over inheritance.

Financials, capital goods likely to lead; expect rotation in defence, railway names: Gurmeet Chadha
"Companies like Voltas performed well initially, but their recent results, especially in the EMPS space, were disappointing. With per capita spending increasing, fast-moving electrical goods, home improvement, and auto sectors tend to do well," says Gurmeet Chadha, Complete Circle Consultants We are hearing reports suggesting an acute shortage of air conditioners and other consumer durable goods. Have you managed to get your hands on them? There is indeed a shortage, and discounts have virtually disappeared, not just for air conditioners but also for refrigerators and air coolers. Companies like Voltas performed well initially, but their recent results, especially in the EMPS space, were disappointing. With per capita spending increasing, fast-moving electrical goods, home improvement, and auto sectors tend to do well. If we compare this to China, where per capita GDP grew by 13-14% over a 15-year period, the consumer durable segment grew by 20%, and the auto sector by 26%. This is more of a long-term play, and extreme weather conditions could provide a better entry point.

Unlisted shares offer terrific returns, but also carry very high risks; should you invest?
Investors in Tata Technologies were overjoyed when the stock got listed in November 2023. At Rs.1,314, the closing price on listing day was more than 160% above the issue price of Rs.500. Not all investors made a killing though. A few weeks before the IPO opened on 22 November, Tata Technologies shares were trading at around Rs.860 apiece in the unlisted market. The investors who bought these shares at that price saw their investment go up by only 53%. Even 53% was not theirs for the picking, thanks to a rule that disallows pre-IPO investors from selling their holdings till six months after a stock is listed. The lockin period for Tata Technologies ended last week on 30 May, but the share price is now Rs.1,030, which means the gains are now pared further to less than 20%. Unlisted stocks are more volatile, less rewarding

Threat of bad advice: A more crucial aspect of financial literacy is not just what to do with money, but also what not to do with it
Brandolini formulated this insight after reading Daniel Kahneman’s book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, and watching a heated political debate on Italian TV. Having watched many TV debates in India, I fully sympathise with Brandolini. The nonsense does tend to flow freely in political debates on TV. However, that’s not what I want to discuss. Apart from TV, the rise of social media and its army of finfluencers have made this principle more relevant than ever. These influencers often peddle bad personal finance advice with little accountability, leading many to make poor financial decisions based on dubious recommendations. In investing, the problem is exacerbated by an industry that actively encourages people to deceive themselves. This issue has become so pervasive that Sebi is starting to take serious action against it.

Should you invest in tax-free bonds?
Gaurav, a public-sector senior executive, is in his late thirties and looking to invest in a fixed return product with minimal risk to build a retirement corpus. He has heard of a few credit accidents and is vary of default risk. His investment adviser tells him that several tax-free bond issues are coming up from public-sector undertakings, infrastructure companies and municipal corporations. Such bonds have long tenors, typically maturing after 10, 15 or 20 years, and would make for an ideal inclusion in his retirement portfolio. Every year, interest/coupon will be paid to Gaurav and will be tax-free income, while the principal amount will be returned to him on maturity, but it will not offer any tax benefit. These bonds will also be listed on a stock exchange, which would allow investors to benefit from any appreciation in price and exit the bonds before maturity. Gaurav is wondering whether he should invest in any of these taxfree bonds. In order to take a decision to invest in tax-free bonds, Gaurav must weigh its features against other investments.

Managing finances after 80: Answers to three major personal finance questions for super senior citizens
heirs. Second, how to balance the need for financial freedom with dependence on children during one’s lifetime. Third, how to provide for the care and comfort of the surviving spouse when one has passed away. The first question has been answered in an earlier column. Simplifying one’s finances is always a good policy in retirement, especially if one crosses the age of 80. There’s nothing sacrosanct about this number in this day and age, but simplification helps both the investor and his heirs. The first step is to complete any pending asset-related processes. Verify and update nominations, check and organise title deeds, consolidate multiple accounts and folios, close dormant accounts, dematerialise paper shares, and review joint holdings for proper operation. The second important step in estate planning for the elderly is making assets accessible to heirs. Many investors leave their children unaware of their assets, causing confusion after they pass away. Consolidate assets and record details, including e-mail and Internet banking access, in a notebook or spreadsheet for easy reference. With advancing age, either trust heirs with account details or ensure they can easily access them after one’s passing.

Election quality has a quantity of its own
election in India is seen solely as a numbers game. The obsession with rally size, voter turnout, number of campaign rallies, vote shares, seats won, etc, is especially big deal in Lok Sabha elections. But now that the hurly-burly's done — and the battle's almost lost and won — it's time to look beyond the nose of quantity and think of whether the quality of this democratic exercise may be strained.
