Delhi court on Saturday dismissed a plea filed by a BJP leader seeking prosecution of AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him in September 2018. Special judge Vishal Gogne turned down the petition filed by BJP's Suraj Bhan Chauhan against a trial court's February 19 order which rejected his complaint against Bharadwaj, citing delay in filing it. The limitation period was found to have lapsed on March 16, 2024, the court said while noting the magisterial court had already accorded the permissible liberal construction to the limitation period. The court finds the conduct of Chauhan to have been «whimsical and opportunistic» in filing the belated defamation complaint, regarding the press conference of the year 2018, only in December 2024 against respondent Saurabh Bharadwaj on the cusp of the Delhi Assembly elections in early 2025, the judge said. Chauhan had alleged that Bharadwaj defamed him in 2018 by falsely claiming at a press conference that an FIR had been lodged against him. He claimed before the special judge that he had «inadvertently» filed the complaint against Bharadwaj, a former Delhi minister, before Saket court instead of Rouse Avenue Court which came up for hearing in September 2020.

Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe was booked by Nagpur police for defamation for allegedly claiming that former journalist Prashant Koratkar was arrested in the presence of a man working in the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. GE Aerospace has handed over the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines on order to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and a total of 12 engines are expected to be sent this year. The supply of LCA Mk1a to the Air Force has been delayed by over a year as the engines could not come on time due to disruptions in global supply chains faced by the American vendor. The Air Force has placed an order for 83 jets on HAL, which now plans to gradually ramp up production, taking it to 24 aircraft a year. GE acknowledged the delays in supplies, saying that it shut down the production line for engines in 2016 when earlier orders had been fulfilled and restarting it was a complex task. The company added that the delivery of the first engine is an important milestone and it will continue to work with suppliers to keep the production line efficient. «Restarting the F404-IN20 engine line during Covid pandemic was even more challenging. With a high focus on safety and quality, and a remarkable commitment from our supply chain teams and our suppliers and partners, we have managed to restart the line,» Shawn Warren, general manager, Combat & Trainer Engines, GE Aerospace, said. The executive said that the engine is one the most successful in military aviation history and the variant delivered has been particularly made for the Indian requirement. «The F404-IN20 engine is a tailored design for India's single-engine fighter, with the highest thrust within the F404 family and a higher-flow fan, unique single-crystal turbine blades, and numerous special components,» he said.

A bench of justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih had taken suo motu cognisance of the Allahabad HC ruling on Tuesday. «We are at pains to state that it shows total lack of sensitivity on part of the author of the judgement. It (the order by high court) was not even at the spur of the moment and was delivered four months after reserving the same. Thus, there was application of mind,» the bench verbally remarked. The bench further orally observed: «We are usually hesitant to grant stay at this stage. But since observations in paragraphs 21, 24 and 26 is unknown to canons of law and show an inhuman approach, we stay the observations in said paras.» Solicitor general Tushar Mehta said there are enough reasons to stay the order. «Some judgements contain reasons for staying them. It has the same,» Mehta added.
