Summer of deaths: 143, 209 or 448 - What's the real death toll in India due to heatwave?
health ministry reported that 143 people across India had succumbed to heatstroke this summer, based on confirmed data from states as of June 20. However, numbers collected by TOI from state governments indicate 209 confirmed heat-related deaths, in addition to 239 suspected deaths, totaling 448 confirmed and suspected fatalities this season. The health ministry's data shows Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of such deaths at 35, followed by Delhi with 21 deaths. Rajasthan and Odisha each reported 17 fatalities due to heatstroke. Ministry sources suggest that the death toll may increase as investigations into some suspected heatstroke-related deaths are ongoing. According to TOI's data, Delhi has recorded 76 heat-related deaths so far, marking the highest confirmed toll in the country. These figures were compiled from various government hospitals in the capital. Uttar Pradesh's Relief Commissioner Office reported 51 confirmed heat-related deaths, with an additional 65 suspected heat-related fatalities, including 51 in Ghaziabad district and 14 in Noida district.

Patna police about «four suspected criminals in an SUV headed to a safe house» on May 5, hours before the NEET-UG exam, led to the unravelling of a nationwide fraud network. This tip plunged the medical entrance test into controversy and created uncertainty for lakhs of aspirants. Following the tip, a team from Patna's Shastri Nagar police station intercepted four suspects. These suspects led them to a meeting place in Ram Krishna Nagar, where around 30 NEET-UG candidates had allegedly gathered to memorize leaked questions and answers. Authorities have since gathered dozens of names of medical aspirants and their «handlers».

labour ministry on Friday hauled up Amazon for inappropriate occupational safety and working conditions at its warehouse after due diligence by the Centre revealed negligence at the Manesar warehouse of the e-commerce giant. Top sources aware of the development told ET that labour secretary Sumita Dawra held a meeting with Amazon officials dealing in public policy and human resource, seeking their response on the lack of adequate facilities with respect to utilities, rest rooms and other related issues at their facility. «The ministry has given them time till Monday to respond to its queries following which it will submit its report to the National Human Rights Commission on the Amazon incident,» a person familiar with the development said.
