Volcano eruption spurs lightning, spectacular Mordor-like sky in Indonesia
Mount Ruang volcano put on a spectacular show Tuesday, sending hot gas and debris high into the sky as an intense lightning show raged overhead.Like a scene from Lord of the Rings‘ fictional Mordor, footage released by BNPB Indonesia shows a continuous cascade of lightning in a toxic ash cloud over the volcano’s crater, as the sky above glows red and lights up with huge flashes.Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate the island where the volcano is located, Reuters reports, and officials warned residents of nearby Tagulandang island that a tsunami could be triggered by volcanic materials falling into the ocean.This is the second time in two weeks Mount Ruang has erupted, spewing ash almost two kilometres into the sky, closing an airport and showering nearby villages with debris.So far, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths associated with any of the eruptions.

In strife-torn Manipur, youngsters take up arms to 'protect' villages
Manipur's Koutruk village. Their objective: Keep residents safe from the warring factions of Meitei and Kuki, two communities that have been in conflict since last year. These youngsters, mostly in their late 20s and early 30s, identify themselves as volunteers and say they have taken up the responsibility to keep their own safe as security forces «could not do enough to protect us». Kotruk in the Imphal Valley is one of the many villages in the state that is «protected» by groups which go by the names «Village Volunteers», «Village Volunteer Force», «Village Defence Force» and «Village Protection Force». These groups, officials say, are not associated with any security agency or the armed forces.

India extends duty-free import of yellow peas by four months
India has extended the timeline for duty-free imports of yellow peas by four more months until October 2024, according to an official notification. In early December, the central government allowed duty-free imports of yellow peas until March 2024, later to be extended till April and then June. It was part of New Delhi's intervention to cool the prices of the overall pulse basket. Reportedly, the duty on yellow peas was first implemented in November 2017 at 50 per cent. India largely imports yellow peas from Canada and Russia.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Sunday clarified on reports which stated that it allows 10 times more pesticide residue level in herbs and spices, calling them false and malicious. The food regulator has said that it has one of the most stringent standards of Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) of pesticides. The MRLs of pesticides are fixed differently for different food commodities based on their risk assessments, it added.

India's forex reserves decline for third consecutive week
foreign exchange reserves declined for the third week, after having risen for the seventh straight week to hit an all-time high of USD 648.562 billion. As per the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country's foreign exchange kitty declined by USD 2.412 billion to USD 637.922 billion in the April 26 week. India's foreign currency assets (FCA), the biggest component of the forex reserves, declined by USD 1.159 billion to USD 559.701 billion, the central bank's weekly statistical data showed.

Kotak Mahindra Bank net up 18% in Q4
