Canadian dream losing its charm? Decline in immigrants pursuing citizenship
Canada, one of the favourite destinations of Indian students is not as popular amongst immigrants today as it was 20 years ago, says a recent study. A recent study by Statistics Canada revealed that fewer recent immigrants in Canada are pursuing Canadian citizenship compared to 20-plus years ago, says CIC News. The research, spanning from 1996 to 2021, indicated a nearly 30 per cent decline in citizenship rates among recent immigrants, with the majority of this decrease observed over the past decade.

The Panama Canal averts a crisis for now. But at a cost to drinking water
Panama Canal has avoided the worst of a shipping crunch that threatened to upend the global economy — but at a cost to marine life and the Latin American country’s supplies of drinking water. After imposing strict limits on vessel traffic last year as drought left water levels languishing, the Panama Canal Authority is increasing the number of ships that can cross. Thanks to conservation measures, water levels fell just over a foot for the year through March 12, compared with three feet during the same period of 2023. Those measures, though, come with side effects. The canal recycles water from locks that vessels pass through, instead of simply flushing it into the ocean. This reused water gets saltier, and some of it infiltrates Lake Gatún, an artificial lake that forms part of the channel and is also Panama’s largest source of potable supply.

'Gold and Bitcoin are both useless asset classes': Why average investors must avoid gold, cryptocurrencies
Bitcoin and gold are zooming, which is not new, because the things people trade in go up and down. These two asset classes don’t interest me, and from time to time, I marvel why people invest in these. Is the current bull run in the two more or less the same? The answer is, mostly, yes. However, I’ll point out something that is different. Gold and Bitcoin are both useless asset classes that produce nothing. In origin and nature, these couldn’t be more different. Gold is the simplest form of wealth to understand; if it’s physical gold, it’s worth something. It has been used as a store of wealth and currency for millennia. Bitcoin is quite the opposite. In physical sense, it does not exist; it is entirely a technological construct. Fifteen years after its invention, relatively few people understand what it is and why it’s worth anything. I don’t know how many people genuinely understand what a blockchain, token, or NFT is, or what a crypto transaction actually does. Yet, in global finance, both are functionally the same. They are both functioning as currencies that are being used as havens from the rain of US dollars, which has now become a flood. Despite their fundamental differences, convergence in their function as safe havens reveals a broader narrative about diversifying assets in times of economic uncertainty. The deluge of US dollars can potentially safeguard their wealth against inflation and devaluation. At least, that’s the theory.

Orcas that hunt sperm whales may be new population, study suggests
Researchers from the University of British Columbia said they’ve identified a potentially new population of open-ocean orcas, which hunt the biggest predators on the planet. In a study published Friday, researchers said a group of 49 orcas has been observed hunting sperm whales off the coast of California and Oregon.Lead author Josh McInnes said the orcas were seen hunting a herd of nine adult sperm whales, “eventually making off with one.”It’s the first time killer whales have been reported attacking sperm whales on the West Coast, he said.“Other encounters include an attack on a Pygmy sperm whale, predation on a northern elephant seal and Risso’s dolphin, and what appeared to be a post-meal lull after scavenging a leatherback turtle,” said McInnes, who is a masters student in the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries.Researchers said the orcas that were observed in nine encounters from 1997 to 2021 could either belong to a subpopulation of transient killer whales or a unique oceanic population. The study said the encounter that was witnessed with the sperm whales occurred in 1997 about 130 kilometres off the California coast. Many of the sperm whales in the pod were left with “extensive injuries,” while one was killed, the study said.“Approximately 12 killer whales were initially involved in the hunt, but this number increased to an estimated 35 killer whales spread out over 3 km.
